In general terms if we have self driving cars I'd rather that they acted to do the best for the largest number. If the car had no choice but to run over a class load of kids crossing the road or hit a tree killing the inhabitants then of course I want the people in the car to die. If it's my kids in the car? No frikking way!!!! I will pay a hacker a lot of money to make sure my kids live in those situations.
People will need to do a lot of changing to live under the Zombie Apocalypse regime.
Technology will have already given the "iTree" the ability to foresee the danger and move like a Triffid to a safer location.
This is actually the problem. We have a mindset which tries to see technology implementation in the context of our current lifestyle. I don't see why this holds true.
Auto guide / self guide practically implies a coordinated system of route planning. An individual ant isn't exactly the brightest of creatures. You'd think that thousands of them balanced on a flimsy twig over water being very industrious would make their situation perilous. And yet, it isn't. They have a rudimentary awareness of collective movements which ensures safety.0 -
UPS are usually pretty good about deliveries, so I was surprised to have a missed delivery note through the letterbox at a time when I was at home.
The doorbell is now working again, having been treated to a new A23 battery. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
What are we going to to do about the possibility of making computers that are cleverer than us, not just quicker and more accurate?
[/Luddite]
Surely the question is what the computers and robots will decide to do about us.
Obviously they might keep some humans along with the other life forms as pets or zoo exhibits but beyond that why bother?I think....0 -

Here's as I see it re robots:
Robots can and will do anything. The rich will own the robots and the robot rights. Prices of robots will rise, so the poor can't afford robots.
The poor won't have jobs, because of the robots - and no robot as they've no job/income.
Incomes from benefits will drop because as the rich are the only ones with incomes (selling robots for higher and higher prices), the amount of taxes raised will have to be stretched further .... and the rich will have robots to work out complex ways for them to hide their wealth and not pay taxes.
As the poor try to have uprisings against having no incomes they'll be killing each other for fish and potatoes ... and whoever is left will be killed by the robots as the rich own the robots and don't want the poor beating down their doors.
Then the rich will turn on each other - and have robot wars.
One day one very rich man, who owns everything, will find he's alone in the world with his robots .... who will hate him for being a war-monger and kill him.0 -
Seeing as we seem to be fairly close (again!) to the magic number, I'm putting up a reminder of our New Thread.
I'm sure there'll be some more fun and games here still, but Wheezy wants his sausages! :rotfl: And I think PN isn't averse to a sausage or two... We have pork, pork and apple, and then there's the Butcher's Burgers too! Lamb and Mint, Beef, Cheese and Bacon... His kebabs are pretty good too, but nowhere near as good as OH's home made ones, marinated in olive oil, lemon and garlic and served with tahini dip. Slurp, drool, yum!0 -

I'd bumped it on the board too, as it'd slipped to page 30 -

Hello Speky. :hello:
Thank you for your kind wishes for all of us NP to have a lovely day. I suspect most NP aren't replying to you because your post, being something of a non sequitur, and from a poster with a low post count, raises suspicions in veteran forum posters that it might be the sort of thing that would be posted by a spambot. However, your other posts seem to me to be real, so I am inclining to the idea that you are a real person. If so, then welcome. Come in and tell us about yourself. Do you like mushrooms? Do you use Excel? Do you live in Hertfordshire?
My apologies. I just noticed your reply :rotfl:
Understandable, I suppose. I'm a nice man and come in peace - promise.
I hate mushrooms. I use Excel most days in my life (work). I live in Glasgow, never been to Hertfordshire.
I drive a white car which is rarely actually white and my shoe size is 7 or an 8.
I have a strange fascination of extractor fans for domestic ovens.
As the name suggests, I have a square head and I wear glasses. I can laugh at myself. I am...SpekySquarehead :j0 -
