5 years is when it's beaten. I was operated on on my 43rd birthday; my 48th will be fun.

Well, I'll celebrate for you, then. Cheers!

    Cheers :)

Unfortunately anybody thinking that, many chavs (on a full raft of systems-worked benefits) have HUGE incomes, so could still turn up at CP. Although the lack of a good pie/chip shop and penny arcades would dissuade them.

Me...I love a £1 bag of chips and £1 in the slot machines.

A Chav to me is not defined by money but by outlook.

For example, I believe it is important to respect any holiday accommodation, be it chalet or hotel or caravan.

We always clean it before leaving.

I'm sorry to say that some of the places at Havens or Butlins show that others don't think like this.

Sheffield city centre is blighted by chewing gum on all the paved streets. Why can't people dispose of things in bins?

It doesn't cost any more to show some consideration for others.

Maybe people in poorer towns become embittered by hard knocks in life. Maybe attitudes get passed down the generations. I don't know.

A better school life but possibly fewer options post school?

I did some infrastructure work on a careers advice system for Learning Skills council.

I remember sitting with an adviser who was informing a caller about her options - she wanted to be a Nanny.

Both routes he outlined involved post graduate courses.

Post graduate!! To be a nanny?!

Have we become too obsessed with qualifications?
No wonder kids feel the pressure today.

What was the media answer? Oh yes, bring in some Chinese teachers to show an even tougher line!

I don't disagree with you but we are where we are and that means getting the right bits of paper.

More generally we seem to have got something wrong, sending too many people into honours degree higher education, and in subjects that do not match the skills the economy requires.
    I think....

In fact, now that students are actually consumers because they are funding their course, I have heard people use this as an argument to study a subject they love rather than one which will lead to a clear job offer.

You can sort of understand this. "I'm paying how much? Well, in that case I want to study History of French Art!".

Higher education is a business in itself now.

    ..........

That sounds lovely. I much prefer the ferry, gives me the "going abroad" feeling that I just don't get by going through a tunnel!

Pastures New I don't really know about French holidays - like you, I just have a sort of impression that they go away/close down for a month.

I was in Paris last week. A lot is closed in the neighbourhoods, plenty for a three week period. It's a little odd to us as Brits, but if they can afford to do that, then good on them. We're not here to work constantly.

No shortage of baguettes that I saw. DS and I ate plenty of bread. :D

We never doubted you...so much better to have gone through the tests than just being 99.9% certain it was the reasons you thought.

In the UK employees get 4 weeks off, so if the French take theirs in one lump because of culture/habit then it's the same financially to business. In fact, businesses that can close down for a month can be better off than those that are continually short-staffed as somebody's on holiday.

It's more efficient too as nobody's coming in and asking for a day/week off here and there etc. Holidays are assured/known.

    Just looked it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_statutory_minimum_employment_leave_by_country

They do get more than us to start with, plus the ability to get more by various methods.
5 weeks (30 days with Saturdays, but not Sundays counted as holidays)

plus up to 22 days of RTT (R!duction du Temps de Travail, English: Reduction of Working Time) for the employees that choose to work more than 35 hours per week - the "limit" is 39 per week,

further additional hours are compensated in almost all the cases by money and not by additional leave hours.

Bonus days off are given to people who take a part of their annual leave outside summer (3 days grant 1 bonus day off, 6 days grant 2 bonus days off).

Combining all these rules, in a few public offices and in a few companies like Orange, the resulting total, for certain employees, might be of 9.5 paid vacation weeks (5 weeks of vacation + 4 weeks of RTT + 0.5 week of bonus days off). Furthermore, there are 11 public holidays
