Maybe Iceland weren't caught up in the horse meat scandal because there's no discernable meat in their food?

Apparently it's because all their beef came from a couple of farms, they had a simple supply chain that they understood.

Tesco et al let suppliers buy from suppliers who bought from suppliers, each of whom was looking to shave another quid off the price.

One supply chain I find fascinating is Maccas spuds in the US. They buy about 80% of their potatoes from a single farmer which puts the two into an interesting position.

From the farmer's point of view, he can't afford to rip off Maccas or crank the price up because who else is he going to sell such a massive quantity of potatoes to.

On the other hand, Maccas can't put the screws on the farmer too much as if he goes bust or just decides he's not going to supply them any more, where the heck are they going to buy a gazillion tons of potatoes each day to keep the fryers filled?

The supplier started out buying a load of pigs and taking them out into the bush where he fed them on wild horse carcasses he shot and fed them. He lived in a tent next to the pigs I believe.

A question for lir because like me she gets rosacea, as well as the other nice ladies... Have you tried micellar water cleanser? I bought a cheap Nivea one and it has been an absolute revelation. Not only is it gentle enough to use on my skin, it cleans deeper than anything else I've used and isn't packed full of chemicals. I still use a moisturiser in addition, but that goes further too.

I haven't. But I might. :). I'm wary of Nivea brand though as Nivea cream irritates my skin more than anything else I've tried yet.

Re Iceland and any other purveyors of ready meals. Am not against ready meals per se, but:

    1) they can't have any potato in, even potato starch as I'll be allergic to it
    2) they have to be 100% vegetarian and can't have any meat, fish or animal products in
    3) then I don't want to eat food that I don't like, such as mushrooms and aubergine.

By the time you rule that out there's precious little left to choose from. If I shopped in Iceland it would take two hours to read all of the packets. Much easier to buy the ingredients and make, even though I'm far from a good cook.

I do think there are Vegan ready meals out there (sure that I've seen them in wholefood shops), but as you say easier to buy ingredients you can have and like to cook yourself. Back in my bachelor days, when I was veggie, I would make about 4 or 5 portions at split and freeze them - so I had ready meals.

That's pretty much my dinner tonight right there: leg of pork, roast spuds, roast aubergine (plus courgette and peppers).

I am now equipped with micellar water :)

Ended up betraying myself and buying a Garnier one as it was the best value in Boots (wouldn't usually shop there as it's pricey but a combination of offers made it the best place to go today :)).
    Have high hopes!

Viva, maybe you've come up with the ideal business model here; supplying tasty vegan ready meals to supermarkets.....

It is very hard to buy nice veggie ready meals. Potatoes and mushrooms are in a large proportion of them, and if I ate the other ones (which consist mostly of cheesy pasta or cheese pizza) I'd be the size of a small house. Being allergic to potatoes though is not very common, so not sure I'd base a marketing plan on my tastes.

However, if there was an easy 'free from' on the label, then maybe this would help.

Didnt a recent study declare that a majority of NP don't like mushrooms anyway?
