I'm working with a much respected tiled roofing consultant on my project.

Hedgehogs are not good. They don't alleviate any problem, can make it harder to clean out when the leaves are impaled and can also cause more of a problem if the leaves form a cover over the hedgehog and the water pours straight over and misses the guttering altogether.

I thought they looked like a good idea, but this lady knows her shizzle and if she says no, I wouldn't do it.

Cheers for that. I thought they seemed a good idea and, in a brief conversation with my previous neighbour (2013-2014) who was a groundworks man working for a building firm that has a really good reputation, he said "We put them into all new builds now". So I thought they must be the right way to go then.

I'll give it a miss. I think they're about £1/foot and so it'll have cost me £60 or so to get them.

Sounds like a plan. Nobody will ever realise and if they do you just give it back.

Pastures The handyman came while I was out, and my OH paid him; I'll ask how much it cost, (at the time I didn't even care how much it was, I'm just so relieved to have got it done at last) but I expect it will have been relatively expensive for the apparent size of the job, as handymen (or handypeople!) seem to charge an hourly rate rather than charging according to what you want them to do.

One I looked at on the 'net claimed to charge by the half-hour, but then quoted £50 " for the first hour or part thereof" and £25 for each half-hour thereafter. Ours will have been a bit cheaper than that, because his agency guarantee to be.

This would be London area rates though, probably it would be a bit cheaper where you are.

Doozergirl, Sorry you had such a bad night :(

Sue Yay, So glad Josh seems to be getting on all right! And that you slept.

lostinrates Glad your head was able to enjoy the late-night music :T

michaels I bet you're glad the parties are all done with for a while! Well done though!

Re weather in Aus - mr ivyleaf was waiting for me at the GP's surgery the other day, and got chatting to the other patients (he usually does - our old GP used to say she always knew when he'd arrived because she could hear laughter from the waiting room :D) and a lady with rellies in Canberra said it had been -10 there the night before, I think. Does that sound right, Gen?

Silvercar/Maggie any news yet? Such a stressful time

There is an invisible mosquito in my room. Leaves it just the right amount of time between noises to cause me to finally relax, then it starts again so I freak out, arms flailing.

I think slowly releasing individual mosquitos into sealed room would make an excellent form of torture.

I can't do that, it's registered land on their deeds. I can't "enclose/fence it" for 20 years without somebody saying "Oi!" (and I don't plan to be here that long).

    And - the biggie - I don't like gardening.

It'd also cost money to clear it all out (plants/weeds) and lay down some sheet/gravel.

But, I will snip back offending bits. There's already a tree that seems to be growing. Trunk is about 1.5" at present and as it sends out new branches I noticed them flapping about at about 10-15' .... and I thought "I don't want that getting huge and flapping about" ... so I've had a sneaky prune. It's now 6' high and with no extended/new branches flapping about. I'll keep pruning that until it's all under 3'.

Tree might deflect some of that wind circulating you get? Is it in the path of prevailing wind?

There is a charity/Not for Profit group round these parts, services for the poor. They quote a handyman at £22/hour. That's not very affordable for the poor when it's 3x the hourly rate of a poor person!

I'd become a handyperson if I had the skills. Or even ONE skill that I could specialise in. But I don't have any :(

Good heavens, I hope they don't make it to my uncle's house, he's a sucker for a sob story and always taking in waifs and strays... I do feel sorry for the people but my uncle is terminally ill... in spite of this he'd still throw his doors open.

I'm not sure what I would do if terminally ill. I really admire your uncle for still having time to think of others.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
