Catching up... (slept yesterday morning after a fab night out dancing, and discovering we now have somewhere that serves properly nice cocktails :j. Then ended up going out for something to eat + cinema last night. Off out for lunch with some neighbours later, at least I know I like G+T if that's what is expected...
Not sure whose social life I have at the moment but it's certainly not mine)
Michaels: hope your dd is feeling better
Viva: as others have said I think I'd try and do without rather than replace everything. If it does turn it to be lactose that's the problem you can get lactase tablets (which help you body to break it down) in case you unknowingly eat something with it in. Good luck and hoe you manage to identify the culprit.
Phoebe: welcome! Sounds like you'll fit in here just great0 -

Not the first lecture lately about burning candle at both ends.
Made breakfast in the probably vain hope of making amends.... But can't complain as it's all out of concern rather than spite. She doesn't mind 100 hour weeks for a while, but this has been going on for a couple of months now...
Anyway, will get a few hours now and back on the ball this afternoon.
That's the thing... It's concern rather than spite. I think most partners understand and make concessions. However MrsT is understandably concerned. To be fair, if you stayed up all night without realising, that may be a sign you need to take the foot off the gas to avoid burn out.

GP has suggested that I give up dairy and wheat separately for three weeks each. I am about to stop wheat, but wondered if I could get some ideas re alternatives to dairy.
I've used Tomor before and tolerated it well, anything else you would suggest? I use quite a lot of dairy... milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter, fromage frais... looking to find alternatives for as many as possible. Many thanks!
Kosher shops have a large range of non dairy products. Is there a shop near you that you can pop into? As others have said, the alternatives for butter are great. Peanut butter, for example.
I wouldn't bother with non dairy cheese.
Various non dairy milks are fine. I like black coffee and tea, anyway.
You can get Alpro non dairy custard, which is good enough.
And a wide variety of non dairy ice cream, which is less okay. Swedish Glace is acceptable. A good sorbet can be delish.
Never tried soya yoghurt, but I am reliably informed that Alpro make it. Please let us know what it tastes like.
Tofu.
Failing a kosher shop, a lot of things like this can be found in your local health food shop or on Ocado.
Do check the list of ingredients. For example, Flora contains buttermilk, even though it is advertised as being a sunflower margarine. It's a minefield. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

If you can find a kosher grocery, then anything marked 'P' (for parev)near the kosher symbol is guaranteed to be diary free.
Tesco do a range of "free from" products, but the marking is wierd , like custard that is free from gluten - well obviously!
Alpro make a lovely vanilla flavoured yoghurt in a big 500g tub.
Alpro also do sets of 4 normal sized yoghurts in fruit flavours.
I'm self diagnosed lactose intolerant and buy lactose free milk. Try the lactofree.co.uk website to see the rest of their products, but they are not diary free. I can tolerate the small amount of lactose in cheese etc so eat normal cheese.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks everyone for food suggestions. I don't want to give up dairy... being a veggie who generally doesn't eat eggs I don't really want to be a vegan. Hopefully it won't come to that.
Wheat is much easier.. I can have porridge for breakfast and rye bread, plus oat biscuits and just eat rice instead of pasta.
GDB you are right re hidden ingredients, will need to watch out for those. Thanks for suggestion re custard, sounds interesting.
In terms of nut butters, I don't mind peanut butter but find it a bit dry tasting, are any if them more moist?
Not near a kosher shop (as far as I know) but was thinking of going to the big Sainsbury at London Colney as I know they have a kosher section there.

Youngest was milk protein and lactose intolerant when a child, it improved in his teenage years but since late last year, it has come back with a vengeance (as has his wheat intolerance).
Rather than cutting it out completely, he has paired it back considerably to try to find a managable level where he isnt running for the loo all the time! That was his decision rather than mine, I was going to go back to the complete exclusion diet but as he is now 17, I have to give him the freedom to decide.
For alternatives when he was young, we used rice milk...soya based items where off the menu as he was intolerant to that too and of course with his nut allergy, nut based item were and still are, a complete no no!
Josh still has some problems with dairy but he just has to make sure he doesn't have too many dairy based products in a day, much better than years ago where even the slightest little bit would have produced a violent reaction both ends straight away.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Thanks again everyone.
I think you may be a bit disappointed with the kosher section of a supermarket.
I'd try a vegan health food shop, too, if there's one available.
Ocado have 549 dairy free products. https://www.ocado.com/webshop/getCategories.do?tags=%7C30930%7C46010%7C46111No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Replacing butter on toast is one thing (jam?), whereas replacing butter in salad sandwiches is another.
I do with out butter on both happily accept on special occasions. If I have crumpets ( I have these reasonable often, certainly each month) I often have a dry fried egg on them...up side down.. The yolk does what butter should do.Use a decent jam and I doubt butter is too missed unless it is a particular joy.
For baking I use butter. ( or vegan recipes) not pretends.0 -
Quick snap, no time to pause for good angle.
I tried to stay traditional...nice, polite little walnuts round the edge...but before I new it I had made a heap of caramelised, crushed walnuts, and its the only lirism to the whole cake and it ( despite shoddy snap) looks so much happier and like some joy ran passed and kissed it on the top of its little head.0 -
Just caught fir rolling out marzipan on polenta.
Conversation in pigeon English.
Lir: what are you doing?
Fir..rolling this out on corn flour.
Lir: That is not 'corn flour' it is 'corn MEAL'
Fir: what is corn flour then
Lir: it looks like icing sugar, one thickens things with it, its corn 'starch', corn 'flour' 'amido di mais'.
Fir: so...this is ruined?
Lir : yep
Fir: uh. I thought it was odd texture.
Edit : All completed now. Time for a nap before getting dolled up.0
