While I think the cashier should have sucked it up and counted the tender for a child and scratch it up as good customer service, there is also the argument that instead of lumbering a 9 year old with in excess of 200 coins, they should ideally have been exchanged for something a bit less, well, bulky.
I can see how it can be seen as unreasonable for a cashier to delay others on a busy Saturday for the sake of counting up hundreds of coins and being the only person working the tills.
Personally, and having worked in retail, I think my reaction may have been one of, I will do it, but feeling it's a bit ridiculous that more appropriate denominations of coins haven't been given to the child. I don't have kids, but when/if I do, I don't think it's an approach I'd take, I'd much rather switch out the coins for larger tender amounts.
The cashier can't win either way. She didn't count it up so you've publicly vented about her/the store on here. If she had counted up, would you have created a thread praising her good customer service on here? I'm guessing probably not, she'd have just been seen as 'it's her job, nothing positive to note about it'.Professional Data Monkey

This is such a first world complaint. The amount of time it would take a staff member to count all those pennies would surely cost the company more than the profit they made on the sale.
I used to work in a shop and we were delighted to take change as long as people had counted it up themselves before handing it over. We had a weighing scales though so it only took a second to check the amount was correct.0 -
Just a side thought, what if the till was full of change, you might struggle to get all those coins in.0

No, under fire retailer pays off selfish and unreasonable customer for an easy life.
Outcome - said selfish oaf now has a new belief in the saying "the customer is always right". Will probably try the same crap somewhere else to the detriment of people who actually give a toss about others.0 -

So far i have been described as aggressive, selfish amongst other things and now i'm a bad parent - keyboard warriors make me smile and a little sad too.0

Crikey. Anyone would think the OP had asked some of you to count his sons loose change, the way you're all going on.
If the OP believes he has experienced bad customer service then he has the right to complain, regardless of what some of you think.
Good on you for complaining OP.0
