I've had a different experience. I opened a FlexAccount around a week ago and got instant approval. Received an email to say that I had to go into branch to show ID and I planned to do this after 2 days but then received an email on the day that I intended to go that my account was fully open. Got the debit card and PIN a few days later. A bit weird as I don't hold any other accounts with them.

I guess the process/time it takes differs from person to person. It said 'instant decision' on their site and I just assumed it would be the same for me. Glad to hear things went smoothly for you. :)

I hope it works that way for me! I applied Sunday and got instant confirmation of acceptance on screen and that a letter would be sent for me to sign and return in a couple days. However I also have an email asking for id which due to work Etc can't take in till Monday coming so fingers crossed will be same with me and don't need to go in after all!

Looking good! I didn't get any of that. Just the 'we'll be in touch in 5 working days' message. Yours looks promising.

What hours is the Nationwide Credit Checking service available?
I tried to apply for an account at 7pm on a Sunday but can't as the credit checking service is unavailable. No planned maintenance and internet banking is working, I've never had this problem with other banks at this time of day.

I've just gone to the site to find out. When I hit the apply button, it gives me the following message:

We're sorry, you can't apply for a current account right now because the credit-checking service we use is unavailable.

Please try again from 6 a.m. in the morning.

Pity it doesn't give you the former time. But I suppose it might differ as it's Sunday night? It might be a little different on a weekday and so it may allow you to apply at a later time.

well i went to branch yesterday (saturday) with the letter and ID the branch staff added a note to say that i had taken it in and will forward the letter in their internal post tomorrow (monday) however he advised that didn't look like they actually needed ID from me and said it is sent automatically in a lot of occasions.

Fingers crossed the account will be open soon!

looks like the branch may have been right and no id was needed after all as have received a second letter today giving customer number and account details but this time only asking for me to sign and return the form rather than taking ID, so looks like my trip to branch on Saturday was not needed after all. Have posted the second letter back this morning any way to be on the safe side.

I applied over the weekend too - instant decision and email telling me what ID to take into branch. I took it today and they said my ID check had already been completed and they can verify it via the electoral roll. I've never had an account with nationwide before.

What amount of cash was it?

The amount is irrelevant. It is one of the conditions of the account is that it is run online and deposits are made by the cash machine deposit system.

It was pouring down with rain outside and there was a queue for the machine so I went inside and paid over the counter as there was no internal cash machine. They took the payment but reminded me that I should have paid via the ATM.

I have also been to the ATM and there have been no envelopes to pay in in the ATM so have had to use the counter service.

It's not irrelevant if the amount you were paying in was over £300.
