Gas Bill jumped £200? is it faulty?

Hello all

Hoping someone can help.

Normally I pay around £100 a month for gas. However, my last statement (We pay monthly) was £300 for just gas! Normally its around £100 per month. I called the Gas company and they said well your metre readings look correct so sorry you have just used more gas in the last 30 days and its been quite cold too, so thats why its £200 more this last month!

Well nothing at all has been different this last month since Sept when we put the central heating on at selected times etc, absolutely nothing has changed since September.

I can not believe that its £300 as opposed to our average of £100 per month. Its just a 2 bedroomed house, radiators only on in one room, just myself and the wife. And the gas company tell me well we can give you advise on how to save on enegry, but still dont believe it is anything we are doing or because it was particularly cold this last month that caused it to be £200 more.

SO I took a reading yesterday of the gas which was

01022698

and today 24 hours later which was

01035070

I called the gas company back and said please can you tell me how much I have used in those 24 hours as that would be an average, actually that 24 hours was at the high end as we had our washing machine on that day etc. So the lady said ok you used 9 kilowatts which is just under £4.

So if I add 4 x 30 days its £112.00.

I don't know what to do or say as the gas company are saying its metres giving the correct readings, you are using that amount of gas and we will give you some energy saving tips.

Any advise appreciated.

Have you been submitting meter readings every month? If so, do you still have these readings?

What do you think could be wrong? so my tariff is approx 4p but I am being charged near £6.00 which is wrong?

I take it it was installed Nov 2014?

On your bill how many kWh do each meter unit make up? It is possible they are still billing you for imperial meter units but you now have a metric meter - that would account for the difference.

    26/11 - 18/12 = 250 cu m/22 days = 11.4 cu m/day
    18/12 - 3/1 = 207 cu m/16 days = 13 cu m/day ( 26/11-3/1 = 457 cu m/38 days = 12 cu m/ day)
    3/1 - 10/2 = 565 cu m/38 days = 15 cu m/day
    10/2 - 11/2 = 13 cu m/1 day = 13 cu m/day

High but consistent use - higher during the past cold month. Your £100 month and £300 month bill does not hold up to scrutiny. Your lowest average daily cost including standing charge is around £6 per day and the highest is around £7.80 per day which equates to £180 - £234 per 30 day month.

When reading the meter ignore the last 3 smaller numbers, they just confuse matters.

As a side note that tariff is ridiculous, a good 30% more than you need to pay - if there is no exit fee look to change.

So what your saying is you think my £300 bill for the last month is correct, despite it normally being £100. And despite using 9 kilowatts which is just under £4 per day.
  • That day you monitored the meter you used 50% more 01035-01022=13 metric units =145kwhrs = £6.50 ish...thats approx £200 in gas plus daily standing charges
