Tea, this is going to sound like a very silly question...but if you play the flute, would you know any good websites to get sheet music or tablature from? I'm thinking about picking up my Ocarina again for LARP purposes
A random click through Youtube just brought up the Skye Boat Song. My dad used to sing me to sleep with that when I was very small. Bittersweetness now as I miss him so much. (And now Abide with Me. Wail!)

Music is so evocative (is that the right word??) isn't it? That sounds like a lovely memory
Funnily enough I've been looking for some good music websites but haven't really found anything so far. I recently started lessons again (after a 20 yr break) so I've been relying on music from my teacher, and things from church. I'll let you know if I find anything
Is an ocarina the little whistle/flute thing that looks like a bird? I could be miles off the mark here!0 -
What a shame that your JL isn't good Pyxis! The ones I go to (York and Newcastle) are fabulous. We went to the Edinburgh one and were less than impressed though!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0

If you're with her, just put an arm around her, and when she's all cried out, she'll be exhausted, so bring her a cuppa and a biscuit. Even if she's not a cuddle person, I think she'd appreciate an acknowledging arm around her while she's crying.
There isn't anything else you can do. But it may help you, too.
Thanks. My Mam isn't a huggy person. I am, but not with my Mam, probably because she never has been with me? My Dad on the other hand, he was totally different.
People say I'm a good listener and offer good advice. I think it can be different when it's family sometimes though, because you worry about them so much and just want to do the right thing? Anyhow, she seemed a lot more cheerful when she phoned earlier.
On the other hand, there's nothing worse when you do need to ask things, and there's no-one available, or worse still, chatting on the phone or to other assistants!
There's always the middle line. I like it when an assistant approaches and asks if he/she can help, but if I say I'm just looking around, tells me that they're just over there if I need any help, then leaves me to it. In my opinion, that's the perfect assistant.
It's about getting the right balance. I don't mind a quick "you ok there?", but I don't like the open questions designed to get you into a conversation....even though it is a good way of converting customers who otherwise might not have purchased!
I totally agree with you though. One of my pet hates is shop assistants too busy talking to their colleagues or on the phone, especially when they're in the middle of serving you! There's this one woman on the tills at Tesco, she talks ALOT, even when she's finished serving the customer. I was in a rush once and had to tell her so so that she would darn well hurry up!0 -
It's a lovely memory but can make me cry and smile at the same time
Yes that's the one, except mine is a Songstone one so it looks like either a pebble with holes or an incredibly odd baby tortoise

I LOVE the idea of a musical instrument that looks like a baby tortoise!0

Abide with me always sets me off too.
Tea, is the fingering (that always sounds so wrong!) similar on a flute like it is on a recorder? I did about 2 or 3 recorder grades and just wondered if any instruments were similar-ish in how you play them. DH bought me a Sax once but I didn't have the lung power to even blow it! :rotfl:0 -
Very similar GG, at least for the bottom couple of octaves. It changes more as you go higher but it's certainly similar enough that you'd be able to find your way around.
The biggest difference imo is the way you make the sound. You breathe across the flute, not into it, and the sound is actually made with your tongue. Sounds weird but makes perfect sense when you play it!
FOH's SIL got a sax for Christmas and I'm still jealous! Have always fancied one... and a cello.0 -
Pyxis, interesting how our experiences are so different!
Given that computing is my work and I'm a complete nerd, I never ask for advice on any technology product purchase, and I've heard terrible advice about computer things dished out in shops - I can remember cringing in PC World listening to an assistant talking about networks and clearly making it up as he went along to fill in the gaping holes in his knowledge, I wanted to step over and say "Actually, if you knew anything about TCP/IP ..." (but didn't, as that would have meant drawing attention to myself and talking to people  - I was only there to pick up some bits I needed in a hurry and couldn't wait for mail order )Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230
