Ok, I'd like to talk about something that is weighing on my mind a bit. I'm going to penguin it just in case.
A few years ago, I was thinking of getting a cat and my friend and I went to a rehoming place to take a look. They had one cat that would suit me and they pretty much foisted her on me then and there without any opportunity to change my mind or prepare myself.
Luckily, she was a lovely cat, she was so affectionate and I loved her. But I was having a meltdown - I didn't know what to do with her. My relationship was breaking down so I was miserable and the centre hadn't given me any details of how to look after her and I was all over the place. So I panicked and decided she needed a better home and took her to a rehoming centre. I just took my poor trusting cat and left her there, knowing she'd hate it. And they were, understandably, really mean to me. I couldn't speak for crying and I cried for days afterwards.
This was about 7 years ago and I still can't forgive myself. I'm actually crying typing this. I just wish I'd been braver and held on and kept her.
I don't deserve to be loved by any animal after doing something like that. When we got dumbass dog I was panicking inside that I wouldn't be able to cope, and I'd do the same to him, but I had DH for support and we got more instructions from the rehoming centre and I hate the idea of ever taking him back there. I'd never do it so I don't understand how I could do that to my poor cat. I wish I knew what happened to her.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
Code, that rehoming place (the first one) was totally irresponsible. They should have done some checks to make sure you had thought it through, and should have given you information on how to look after him/her. They should also have been available for support (info, if nothing else) when you were struggling.
People's lives change. Relationships break down, living situations and finances change and sometimes you can no longer cope with the pets you have. You made sure the cat went to a rescue where they could find a new home, there are many animals that don't get that chance and are just dumped, or worse.
I think you need to forgive yourself. You're clearly a great mum to dumbass dog. Sometimes you have to accept that, as much as you'd like to have done things differently, there's nothing you can do to change the past. Please don't be too hard on yourself x.0 -
You just made me cry again tea. Thank you. It's honestly the worst thing I have ever done.
Also, I'm totally not looking at rescue bunnies.
Oh, and WaS, glad you're feeling a bit better. I sympathise with the neuralgia.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
What tealover said. :grouphug:Deal with things as they are, not as they should be.0

Exactly what tea said, code. Sometimes we aren't in a position to cope with something brand new, this is not our fault. The rehoming place were wrong to make the decision for you and not give you any information to help you. You have done NOTHING wrong. You still looked after your cat, you took her somewhere safe. Sadly, a lot of people would have just abandoned an animal in your circumstances or neglected it, you made sure the cat was ok.
Give yourself a break, you did your best even when you knew the situation wouldn't work. You couldn't be a better mum to dumbass dog who clearly loves you to bits, he see's how loving you are to him. As a giant pillow that dispenses chicken wings then? :rotfl:
Thank you guys. I know it's silly to get upset about it after so many years, but I just feel so guilty.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
Hahahaha! That would be it, code! It's not silly, you have a good heart and a lot of love to give so blame yourself. You really have no need to feel guilty though, you did more than a lot of people would have in your circumstances.Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

You do what you need to do at the time that's best for the both of you, whatever the reason is. As I'm sure you all know I love Gitdog to bits (still not entirely sure why.) But I can also envisage circumstances where I would not be able to keep him and would have to look at rehoming him, however hard that would be, because it would be the best thing for him.
You were struggling so you did the responsible thing and took him back where he could go to another lovely home. Any sensible re-homing centre would far rather you did that than struggle on. Unfortunately some rescue centres are complete idiots and don't seem to have a clue about the real world. They may care about animals, but they can be completely useless in how they go about dealing with people. You just managed to find one of those.
Good to see you back in the land of the living, WaS.
Edit - I am about to go round and kill someone next door. Nice neighbours moved out and have got tenants in. Tenants are into DIY. Which they seem to leave till at about 8pm when the banging and drilling starts. I need an early night tonight so am seriously hoping they don't keep going after 10pm or we will be having words. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
