I'm back at work. With a stonking headache. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
messedUp, when I do fast days, like JM, I try to leave it as late as possible, because I find that the 500 calories is such a small amount, it acts like an appetiser, and can make me feel hungrier! So I tend to go to bed straight after.
500calories is really very little, so I don't understand how people can have smoothies with nuts and seeds. The latter contain huge amounts of calories. I tend to have 2 to 3 oranges, cut up and eaten with a fork. And/or a huge bowl of green vegetables, without dressing. Possibly also some cherry tomatoes. I don't have milk in tea or coffee as the norm, so I can have endless cups of green tea. If you do take milk, that could be a problem!
Even one slice of bread can take a big chunk out of your 500 calories, so I avoid that.
Some fast days, I don't have the full 500 calories, it just depends what's in the house.
I would recommend you read the book, (there's a new edition out, I believe), as it not only explains the health benefits of the regime, and gives the research results, but there is also a handy calorie list at the back, (albeit tending to American food!), which gives calorie content per 100g or 100ml. You do need a pair of scales and measuring jug. Without scales you will deffo underestimate what something weighs!
Also, when looking at the calorie content of packaged food, remember the calories listed are per 100g and not per pack or even per piece in the pack usually. I find I keep clear of packaged food as it all works out too high. Hence I stick to oranges, tomatoes and plain green veg. Believe me, after a day with nothing, it tastes wonderful!(I just lurve spiders!)

Here is the suggested THREAD ETIQUETTE. By following this etiquette, all posters, whether new or existing, will feel safe, unpressured and respected..
- This is a thread for support. We have discovered some good friends on here, but we promise always to welcome and include new people, and not to be cliquey.
- People may make suggestions to help each other, and might even ask if the suggestions were helpful or have been carried out, but we'll really try not to nag each other or put too much pressure on.
- The normal board rules about sexism, racism, homophobia etc. apply, but if we are careful we should be able to discuss almost anything without breaching board rules - so far we have discussed subjects ranging from child abuse to incontinence!
-If someone thinks that too much pressure is being applied, they can post the trigger word PENGUIN and flag up the fact that they believe there's a potential for someone feeling too nagged to do something. ANYONE could post PENGUIN if they felt there was a danger that suggestions were being enforced too much.
Similarly, if they want to discuss something that might be a trigger for some people, then posting PENGUIN would be a warning that what follows in the whiteout might be a trigger.
- So, if you think something might be a PENGUIN, please post something like the green bit which follows.
"I would like to discuss something to do with [insert subject here], but I am concerned that this might be a trigger for some people. Is everyone OK if I post about that?"
Then, when you post, repost the word PENGUIN above the discussion. Then post the penguiny bit in white! And the phrase END OF PENGUIN when you have finished.
It will look like this. You will be able to see the white text if you highlight it or if you quote it, (so please don't 'quote' a post containing a penguin onto the thread!)
(Harmless example follows here):-
PENGUIN
This is a penguin. A nasty, crotch biting penguin (CBP).
It isn't really! So you can look.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozGTv0hxhpc[/url]
END OF PENGUIN
(NB on a tenth-page repost of the etiquette, you can see these penguiny words because they are white against the green 'quote' background. On a normal post, they will be white against white, and so won't be seen on the thread.)
IMPORTANT: It has been ascertained that some posters to this thread have found that there are certain subjects which act as triggers, precipitating a worsening of their condition.
To protect these posters, you are respectfully requested NOT to discuss these subjects on this thread:-
Religion. (Please note: it is recognised that everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and we respect those beliefs. It is only because of the fact that religion does act as a trigger for some posters, that we exclude it from discussion.)
N.B. Please don't even mention the name of the religion.
The afterlife. The reason for this is explained in this thread by one poster, and there will be others for whom this is a trigger.
We ask and thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
.........:starmod:.....................................................................:starmod:................
It should be pointed out that if anyone is feeling very distressed or close to a crisis, they do not have to worry about what they are posting, or whether it is a penguin for someone else or not. In a crisis situation, just post! We wouldn't want anyone to feel that they couldn't ask for help in case it's a penguin! The penguin thing only applies to a general discussion situation.
- More suggestions please.............We stress that we are suggesting that we AGREE some Thread Etiquette to HELP people who might feel anxious about posting, we are not trying to IMPOSE rules, just relating this to facilitating groups, so that people feel safe and able to participate as fully as they can.
...............Thread Motto...............

Morning all
(well mid afternoon for me :rotfl:)
Hope everyone is well - let's get going today :j (or not :rotfl:).
All this talk of fasting is making me hungry :whistle:What came first, the music or the misery?
Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?0 -
Yes, and whatever you do, turn off all cookery programmes on a fast day!
It's AMAZING how many programmes about food there are on the Teev! You don't notice until you're on a fast day!
And Adverts!
And people talking about food!
Food is everywhere! :rotfl:
Ps. You do get used to it though, MessedUp!, surprisingly quickly, although some days are worse than others.
The trick is to choose busy days to do the fast. The worst day would be lounging around at home, bored.
And it's ok to exercise on a fast day, too!(I just lurve spiders!)

They may not realise how bad the sound-proofing is in this block, if the man upstairs turns a tap on we can hear it so any noise outside sounds as if it is the flat. This of course makes me totally paranoid to speak because if I can hear them, they can hear me! WaSp's headphones are a good idea, they are noise cancelling so may work better than earplugs. Thank you for the suggestion, I will give them a try.
Talking of the man upstairs he is yelling at the poor dog again. It doesn't like the noise so is barking, I know how it feels. I am firmly on the doggies side! (but I wish it would protest a little more quietly).
When I had to have my central heating replaced, youngest sat in the front room, with his noise cancelling headphones on and a blanket over his head.
Ok, he got some strange looks but at least he didn't go into meltdown mode and was ok (ish) for his maths GCSE resit a few days later. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
