Only wear red to a wedding if you've slept with the groom, or want people to think that you've slept with the groom. :-)
Well maybe she has slept with the groom...
Do people honestly get so hung up on the meanings of colours these days though?

    Can safely say I haven't!

Now there was me worrying about the fact that red can be quite a bold colour.....

Must admit that I would be kind of stuck if people thought that, as the majority of dress I've liked the best from all the lovely links have been at least partly red! :rotfl:

Can I just clarify that the original dress that I put up was chosen because it had the same pattern as my dress, not because it was my dress.

I was only concerned about the colour of the dress, not the style. Now I'm having doubts about it all.

Mines is a respectable knee length and made of a thick cotton material

We can't see the actual dress so any comments are a bit irrelevant aren't they ?

FWIW i wouldn't wear red and black to a wedding.

I think the dress is fine for an evening party but not really right for a wedding especially if it's in a church and you will, probably be freezing. And please, definitely not leggings! Would you feel more comfortable in a classic dress under your beige coat and a fascinator and pashmina in matching bright colours to look bright and cheerful. I always think that anything black worn at weddings make them appear rather funereal.

    "Plain black"?
    Have I lost the plot?

Weren't you talking about the black & red dress?

    Or have things moved on?

Sorry if not clear, I meant the shrug/bolero jacket not to look so 'plain black' - the ones I linked to were sequiny or a bit more sparkly. Plain black on a jacket or cardigan can make it look a bit plain or boring. Thought it could do with a bit of snazzing up for a wedding.

Could also carry clear nail varnish to stop any ladders/holes that may be starting...

The fabric looks fine to me and there's nothing wrong with above the knee providing it's not so short you'd flash other guests if you bent down or crossed your legs.

Personally I'd find trying to match the red too much of a hassle (if you want to, take the dress with you when shopping) and so I'd opt for black bolero and maybe a red brooch or fake/real red flower.

Fascinators IMO can be pretty ugly bc you get nice view one side and then plastic hairband the other - better to go for a real hat and you can find some great ones in charity shops. I'd suggest black and as fancy or plain as you want.

Sequins with a print IMO is too much. Go matt not patent for bag and shoes and plain court looks classic. Bag could be clutch or something on a shoulder strap but not too infomal or chunky.

You could look in M&S, Debenhams, Moss Bros, House of Fraser or charity shops for an adjustable men's/boys' silk cummerbund to give the dress a more formal look in black silk or red if you can match to the dress.

NO to leg warmers and cardigan. Also not to the net petticoat bc they scratch and ladder your tights. I'd go pale for the tights and sheer.

If you're a chilly mortal you could maybe make the bolero/shrug velvet or wear a cashmere/lambswool top over the dress and add a beaded collar plus jacket ?

No, it was me who misunderstood.

I thought the OP had changed from the red & black dress to plain black.

Definitely think plain black for jacket or shrug.

As someone who got married pretty recently, I have to say I'd be fuming if someone had turned up in that... black, and SO SHORT.
