...tesco mobile have not replied
Everything else is guesswork.
You are guessing which data base your bank is using.
You are guessing which database other insurers use.
You are even guessing that it is a fake phone.
Is it not just possible that someone has made a simple mistake somewhere?0 -

this was after i told then after my number ports ( some point today) i will be cancelling and demanding the PAC.
also to wealdroam do you think a bank and insurance company is going to use one of the free IMEI check services. The will be using an official source. Even tesco online chat confirmed the wrong info on external sources when they checked0 -
Why?
Errors happen.
The most logical course of action in this case would be the retailer contacting the manufacturer to correct the error. Theoretically this could have happened already.
The only error that seems to have happened here are typo's.
How on earth is a retailer going to get a database changed through a manufacturer over the weekend ? it only came about on Saturday.
Even then how can they do this on the word of someone in a bank or member of the public without any evidence of either packaging or the phone.
At the end of the day the packaging shows the correct number confirmed by the phone and confirmed on the data base as being a Moto E
To suggest this has been solved by Tesco overnight behind the scenes is ridiculousIt's not just about the money0 -

It does not mean theres anything wrong here other than the fact some database is showing the wrong information by having the wrong number typed in at some point. It's not just about the money0 -
Recently I could not access parts of a couple of websites, and it eventually turned out my IP address was showing as somewhere in USA.
I discovered the range had been reassigned to my provider, but some whois records weren't updated yet.
I restarted the router and the new address was fine.
Maybe your case is similar, as some replies have hinted.0 -

Just FYI IF it was GSMA (who knows what database they use) - they only issue updates weekly.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

Maybe, but even so the IMEI should originally be the phone it is displayed on.
Tesco mobile told me thisit looks like someone at GSMA has issued Samsung IMEI numbers to Motorola as all out Motorola phones are listed as Samsung's
so if phone stolen even from house we would not be able to claim as according to records held by insurance companies says its not a motorola. If needed what details will it show up if the police check the IMEI number.
So yes the listed records on GSMA should show the correct phone0 -

The IMEI number is allocated and installed at point of manufacture (not point of sale) on both the phone and packaging.
Part of the IMEI number is the TAC and FAC which identifies the make and model of the phone.
The IMEI's last digit is a check digit so the number can be validated by an algorithm so no mistakes are made and entries in the register are correct.
Hence when a batch of phones are released the IMEI numbers are not consecutive because of the need for the check digit.
Which means it's not possible for Motorola phones to have Samsung IMEI numbers. It's not just about the money0
