And I find it odd that people teach their children to consider things to be "theirs". In our house it is ours, joint property.

Does that go both ways? Do the children have an equal joint claim on the stuff the adults own? ;)

I think yes. I think that kids use everything their parents own, and usually they get to sell it in the end.

Well, all out stuff used to get donated to charity shops or blue peter appeals and whatnot. None of it was ever sold!
Depends on whether it's actually worth something. Old video games and Lego can fetch quite a lot, whereas a bag of stuffed toys is probably best going to the charity shop.

I remember as a kid putting my Lego up for sale in the local newspaper and also taking things to a car boot sale. My My-Little-Pony collection went to a younger relative though, but that was fine because I'd inherited them from an older relative myself.

Nowt wrong with teaching your kids some business skills and how to be enterprising, and also learning how to make charitable donations too. But they should be involved in the process, rather than waking up one morning to find that mum has stolen all their toys.

I hope I can have an equal claim on my Dad's recently purchased merc but I doubt he'll buy the 'it belongs to the family' line! Could be worth a shot though!

So, a book can be household, but a uni book that I buy so that my child can get a degree is a gift to them. My £100 I can use for food because even though its a present to me, I have to use it on food because I've spent the family budget on a uni book that I now have no claim to.

I can't operate like that. My child would miss out big time.
A uni aged "child" should probably be buying their own books out of their loan/grant. I certainly wouldn't have expected my parents to give me extra for them.

Did your parents take a cut of the profits from your venture to cover petrol, gas etc?

Unless something was worth a lot it wouldn't be worth my time faffing with ebay or car boots to make a few quid, time is to precious and I don't have enough as it is!

At the car boot I went halves with my mum on the entry fee. And yes, of course it's not worth while putting everything on eBay - but I wouldn't sneak my child's possessions off to the charity shop without clearing it with them first.

Whereas our car is used for everyone's benefit. My dad would definitely give his car up if I were in dire straits. It's just a car.

I wouldn't either, I would never sneak stuff anywhere. Where did you get that idea?

It's nice as a parent to be able to help out though.
