I have to agree. And add that not everyone who has a problem with alcohol is an alcoholic, or indeed wants to stop drinking totally.
I am an alcoholic who now chooses not to drink alcohol, but I know many people who over indulge, or turn to drink when life throws them a curve-ball, have the odd binge that leaves them feeling ill for days etc etc.... they sometimes ask me for advice and I am more than happy to spend time chatting with them and helping in any way I can. But that does not mean I have the right to label them an alcoholic and tell them their only hope is to go to AA and find a higher power/do the 12 steps etc.

We are (thankfully!!) all different, and one persons chosen path may not be right for another.

If this thread is here only to help people who want to stop drinking...maybe its title should be changed?

I Dont think i have labeled anyone alcoholic have i? if i have then i apoligise,

The fact is i dont know anyone that has maneged to turn their drinking carrer from bad to good, so i assummed maybe wrongly that people who came here wanted to stop. theres a bit in more about alcoholism that says here are some of the things we have tried, ans it lists a lot of what carlos said..... if people can do them things and the drink s no longer a problem to them, fantastic, however im an alcoholic and i cant,

I thought that carlos's post could be damaging to some one who looked and thought i know i'll just drink beer and slowing bulid my tolerance up..... i realise after thinking about it that if some1 wants to do that they will sooner or later.

If this thread is to be used for helping people control as well as stop do you know anyone that can advise them on this ?

As a long time reader and in the early days poster on the original thread I think it would be fair to say that the thread was started as a support thread and was never intended to "Help" anyone stop drinking but to be here for anyone who was affected by alcohol or who`s lives had been affected by alcohol in any way or form (in my case my Mum drank and sadly I lost her last year) There have been many people pass through and give and take advice but ultimately a lot of the time it has been a place that has been considered somwhere to be, to share the good and the bad times in relation to life in general as well as being somewhere people can talk and help others through the rough times.

Again, It`s fantastic that Al-Anon and AA are mentioned within the thread as they have both been a great help to lots of people but as in any other given situation that life throws at us, we all take different paths to ultimately reach our destination.

  • Well said Maria.

You are right, we've all got to find our own path, but I think its wonderful to share ideas and experiences.

I know I can often be a bit too pro AA, but thats just because it has helped me, and I want to help anyone still suffering.

Glad this thread is still around.

  • Well done feelinggood that's quite an achievement.

Thanks for your comments Maria, I agree with you that everyone has to find their own path. Mine happened to be Al-Anon so that's what I talk about (giving my own views, not those of Al-Anon) but I'm interested to know how others have found their way through.

    How are you Mr Mac?
That's life, it's just the way it is :)
