Landlords to students seem to get away with total recklessness.

My old student dig had exposed wires in the ceiling void above the shower. I though I was just imaging the blue flashes for a while, but when the lights went out and the hole began to smoke did I realise just how dangerous it was.

Also, a leek on the roof was patched up with a breeze block, rats were living within the wall voids, the bathroom was regularly flooded, slugs occupied the kitchen, bathroom and toilet, and the landlord and his brother let themselves into the house as they pleased.

Accommodation was hard to come buy, so you had to put up and shut up or face eviction.

by law anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of
their business must be competent and registered with CORGI
    (the
Council for Registered Gas Installers). Always check your installer is
registered by asking to see their current CORGI photo ID card which has a
photo of the installer, their CORGI registration number, their trading title and the
    expiry date of the card.

Looks like your LL broke the law, contrary to what PL may think. Have you been breaking the law too PL?

I think I've made my point.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

The legislation you quoted yesterday evening makes it 100% clear that the landlord broke the law. I'm not sure what you quote above helps, the business referred to is arguably that of fixing gas appliances and not renting accommodation which would support PL's argument.

Presumably CORGI are the best people to turn to if you wanted to get the LL prosecuted although the HSE might also be interested.

OP may also like to consider contacting their council, most of whom seem to have a dislike for dodgy landlords.

What is the landlord's buisness? Letting property.

What was the landlord doing? Carrying out work on gas appliances in his let property.

I would say he was carrying out work on gas appliances as part of his business.

I just wish the HSE were more proactive & fined people for this sort of thing before deaths occurred.

People are being warned to check their gas fitters' credentials after a Cynon Valley man was jailed for working without being registered.

    HSE inspector Hugh Emment said:

"This case also provides a salutary warning for anyone doing gas work without the correct training or registration - HSE will take the strongest action possible against anyone who does not comply with the law. "Their behaviour is putting lives at risk."

We are still waiting for them to come out, they contacted me yesterday to say they would be out today, but still nothing :( We have told the landlord he hasn't got back to use either.

Corgi also said on the phone that if the landlord has fitted the boiler and he is not registered and he is renting the property out its not legal at all.

I also dont know were people are getting there claims from that you dont have to be registered, it says it on a number of gov't websites and it even says it on the corgi website.

Regardless of wether or not people are skilled to do the job, the law stops cowboys from getting away with it. If you are not registered your not 'seen fit' to do the job. If you can do the job, and its not a problem, got get yourself registered. This is what the landlord should have done, seen as he owns more then 20 student houses and from what he toldme he has fitted more then 15 boilers in that past few years.

He is asian, moved to the uk when he was younger, hes about 55 now. He worked in a factory all his life until he had enough money to buy a property to let, and built up from there. I dont trust him in the slightest.

When Corgi finally come round, tell them about his 15 other illegally installed boilers. Hopefully they will liaise with the HSE, there is a much better chance of them prosecuting a serial illegal installer than for a one-off chancer.

I also don’t know why there are a few people on here who firmly believe that it is legal for them to mess around with gas appliances with impunity. Perhaps it is because they are simply cheapskate landlords such as yours prepared to put profit before peoples lives.

The way I see it is, as a registered gas and unvented heating (which, believe it or not, can be more dangerous than gas) installer, I, and other Corgis on this forum, have the confidence of:-
    • National grid
    • The HSE
    • Letting and estate agents
    • Solicitors
    • Courts
    • Corgi themselves
    • Home owners and tenants
    • Gas appliance manufacturers
    • Insurance companies
    • Building controls officers
The other twits who believe that anyone with a blowtorch and a bag of spanners can safely install and maintain a heating system cannot claim any such thing. They are competent in their own minds only.

Please let us know the outcome of this as I am sure that others are in similar situations as yours.

    Tell me this elite ?
Is it still the case that you can become CORGI reg; ( OK you have still to pass your qualifications ) without showing that you can use a blowlamp and do a soldered fitting properly ! the reason I ask , not so long ago I knew of an individual who became CORGI reg; and had never used, or demonstrated that he was COMPETENT in the use of such a tool  and was let loose in people's homes !

Or have they tightened up ?
