The Completely Crazy 2015 Clothes Challenge

Another year and yes, another crazy clothes challenge!

Come on and join in as we attempt to keep the success we achieved going for a further 12 months at least!

Do you buy clothes as something to do and stick them in your wardrobe without trying them on and leave them unworn?
Do you wish you could spend less on clothes?
Are you tempted by the sales to spend and buy clothes you don't need?
Do you have clothes in your wardrobe you don't wear?

Come and join us!

A little about me. I ran the challenge last year and we had many members pledging to stick to their personal budgets for the year ahead along with many successes of no clothes spends months.

I stuck to my budget, just spending £86/£100.

I had 7 no spend months on clothes :rotfl:

My focus is paying off a long term unsecured loan once more this next year. I've repaid an additional 28% in the last year and aiming to do at least the same this next year. I'll set the same budget again for 2015 at £100 as that's my priority rather than buying new clothes.

Things that don't count for me are buying outdoor/walking clothes which I save up for or use birthday or Christmas money. I save up using £2 coins to pay into the bank so it takes some time to save up and I have to make sure I really want and need the thing I'm spending on and it gives me time to make this decision.

Who's up for it?
Who wants to reign in their spends?

Believe me it can be done, a few years ago I would never have imagined I could have 7 months with no spends on clothes. For the last 2 years its worked a treat for me in helping me control my spending and focus on my priority which is paying off all my unsecured debt.

You can join any time, we had members joining in November and December, it's never too late to join!

Thanks fedup, I am in again, but having done a totally unrealistic budget of £120 last year, this year I am going for £30 per month, so put me down for £360 please.
Spend less now, work less later.
  • Thanks Fedupandskint, I am in for the long haul

  • Hi,

I would like to sign up for this challenge and set myself a limit of £200 for the year.

Over the last few years I have limited myself on clothes buying but I still buy when I don't need to so this challenge will help me to reign in un-necessary spending.

    Thanks

  • Forgot to mention... I'm saving a small amount of £5 per month to potentially spend in the sales this time next year. It's a small amount I don't miss and it could go towards a new coat or some walking clothing next year. Let's see at the time!

Whilst browsing in the sales at the weekend I found a going out top I liked with 50% off taking the price to £17.50. I put it back thinking I don't go out that often enough to wear it. If I had some more disposable income I might have bought it. Anyway I stuck to my principles of saving some pennies for next year.

If it is reduced any further I'll try it on and, if I like it when I try it on, I might buy it as it goes with 2 skirts I have. If it isn't and there aren't any left in my size, never mind!

  • I'd like to join again this year please. It really helps to focus the mind on what you think you "need". I have so many lovely clothes that are currently too tight so I've joined the ultimate biggest loser challenge too so that I will be able to go shopping for "new" clothes from my own wardrobe! Will set budget at £100 but will try to keep for u/w replacement only.

Thanks fedup for running this again. Do I keep the same number as last year?
I'm the only one who is stopping me from achieving my goals! :wall:

Wow, it is resolve like that I need to learn. If I ever get as far as trying something on in a shop, I buy it! Also saving £5 a month towards next years budget is a great idea. Thank you :money:

  • I didn't keep to last years budget but then my daughter got married. I did manage to spend less than £400 though. Now I am jobless, am temping when there is work and get contribution based JSA in between which will obviously run out in due course. I am trying to find a job but enough rambling I will not spend any more than £300 on clothes in 2015.

    I'm in for 2015 :T

I can't get all my clothes into my wardrobe / drawers, and finances have hit critical. So signing up for this will hopefully remove all temptation to 'just have a peek' in charity shops or sales !!!

My 2015 spreadsheet shows zero budgets for clothing, footwear and fitness (sports clothing/footwear comes into that category) amongst many other categories. But I can make money for them by doing surveys, buying reduced to clear groceries and selling items from around the house (and several other ways) - plus I can use any money given to me, including the £100 I got this Christmas which I'm including in 2015 spends so I can carefully consider where/how to spend it. So it still seems sensible to set myself restrictions on what I can buy.

I'm actually setting myself restrictions on the items I can buy rather than a financial limit though, as in many cases I've no idea what I'll have to pay to get the right fit.

From my footwear budget I'm going to allow myself a pair of knock-around trainers which I'll be out looking for next week. These are a fairly desperate need, as the ones I'm wearing at the moment are the best I've had for cycling but won't last much longer if continually used for walking to/from the local shops. Purchased on 2/1/2015. Had set a mental limit of "ideally below £25, definitely no more than £30", and paid £22.99.

From general clothing I can only spend on bras, and then only if I need some as I lose weight (bought when I last lost and still have those, so will only need if the regained weight shifts differently). I honestly can't see me needing anything else at all, unless I somehow end up having to attend an event that requires a long dress / ball gown or one of my kids decides to get married this year (both very unlikely), I do have a wedding to go to (OH's nephew), but I think it's going to be fairly low key so I should be OK with the smart dresses I already own - as long as I can shift some weight by the end of August !!

From my fitness budget the only items I can buy are a pair of lightweight waterproof overtrouses (yet to find any that are short enough for me), swimming caps (compulsory in the gym pool, but my hair is long enough that I'm struggling to find any that will go on and stay on - the few I had are currently rotting away from the chlorine after not a lot of use, so I'd like to find some longer lasting ones!), and possibly some running shoes (which will come expensive - currenly have 3 pairs that cost around £100 each, and at least 1 pair is close to recommended mileage limit). Oh, and possibly sports bras - with the same "only if the ones from last time I lost the weight don't fit" rule as for everyday ones.
