Who's signing up for a "Dry January"?

  • I am also attempting to have a dry January. I had a wobble last night as I have reduced my working hours to four days a week and a part of me really wanted to celebrate the start of my three day weekend with a San Miguel. But I stayed strong.

So I have not had a drink since the strike of midnight New Years Eve but Hubby has caved tonight - he is now on the wine after two bottles of lager. We have a party tomorrow so that will be test for me.

Hopefully this thread will help me fight any moments of weakness over the next few weeks.
  • Another big test tonight! It was step-father-in-law's 70th so my sister-in-law held a bit of a get together. I have 3 sisters-in-law. OH picked up some Cidre and I chose a bottle of tonic water. SIL kindly poured in a wine glass for me. Usually when I'm around these ladies the wine is flowing freely and I would easily have a bottle. If I can get through these kinds of temptations then I feel I can get through any of them. I was tempting I'm not going to lie but I thought I've made it over a week, why ruin it now! Obviously they all think I'm pregnant!!! Reactions were, 'impresed', 'disappointed' (I think one SIL missed Her drinking buddy) and 'shocked' ha ha!

I'm actually feeling very energetic, my mood is incredibly positive (not bad for someone who was only coming off anti-depressants just 6 months ago). I'm getting stuff done, instead of wasting the evening on the sofa with several glasses of wine, I'm cleaning up the kitchen and getting to sleep at a decent time. After January I'm saving my wine for the weekend, dinners out and celebrations. Resetting my habits

  • Thats my plan after January too.

Maybe two nights a week have a couple of drinks and nights out, special occasions.

Kind of reversing the two nights a week with no drinking.

    We shall see.

Maybe you could do it apart from that day you have arranged?

I'm doing it, and I rarely drink. People on facebook and my friends and family reckon I don't drink anyway, but I do - probably one or two units a month. They've all seen me drink, but because I don't drink every day they class me as teetotal. Odd.

    Sorry, only just saw this
Wouldn't sound right to me to say that I'm doing dry January apart from that one day in the month, especially given that other than a few glasses of champagne over the Xmas period, the last time I had I had a drink was in, erm, August I think :rotfl:

I hope all is going well for those who are doing it :)

Day 10 and I must admit it's been surprisingly easy. It was the habit of opening a bottle that I found most difficult at the beginning but now I just find other things to do like brew a pot of tea or do the dishes straight away.

We're around at a friend's house tonight for dinner so I'll be taking a couple of bottles of alcohol free beer with me (and a nice bottle of red for them!) which will do me just fine.
    Dry January: 31/31 days. :T

Planning on finishing the bottle of Schloer tonight. Next time I'll just buy value apple juice and lemonade as it tastes exactly the same, plus cheaper!

I'm definitely going to carry this on throughout the year.

    Well done everyone, keep going!

Today's day 14 for me, it's not been too bad but I'm expecting to struggle tonight as I'm going out for a birthday meal with friends. I'll wear my wristband as a reminder!

I agree that I've been eating more chocolate instead of drinking, but I think that's partly that the Christmas eating habits haven't worn off yet!

I'm definitely planning on resetting my drinking habits after January, it's not good for my health and I shouldn't really drink much with the medications I'm on. I'm planning on sticking to four drinks a week or less (that's pints or singles, not bottles of wine!)

Good luck for the weekend everyone, you can do it! :D

beluga, where did you get your wristband from? Was it free?
  • Tonight Im having a slimline tonic water and cucumber (its mixed like that, obviously a hint of cucumber). Am fed up with water so I need to roll with it until Im not fed up with water.

This is day 8 for me as I had a drink on Jan 2nd. Im not planning to drink again until mid March at least.

I cant say what it is I miss, I dont even know if its the habit, I just like some alcohol now and then. I don't miss a hangover and the more I didnt drink last year, on the rare occasion I had one too many, I really didn't like it.

It does feel like something is missing, but it's not that big of a deal.
  • Purpleshoes, the co-op do a range of those flavoured waters and one of their fizzy ones is green apple and cucumber. If you like the tonic and cuke you may well like that too.

I'm up to day 11 now as I started early. I'm currently getting my cider vinegar/ orange juice immune boost but will be drinking Blossom Cottage morello cherry cordial with fizzy water after that. Yum. No pounds lost but I'm sleeping a whole lot better most nights and look healthier in the face.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
