My son just bought a 2004 BMW 3 series M3 CSL for £36,000 :S
As soon as he told me I literally had a heart attack and thought he was scammed as well as completely foolish for paying such a high amount!
Make matters worse he showed me the car and took me for a ride. Its probably the most flimsy German car I have ever been in. It doesn't even have air conditioning and the seats are extremely uncomfortable!! Lets not even go into the ride quality, felt like my run down Vauxhall Corsa I had 20 years ago!
Why is a luxury car that doesn't have basic things like air conditioning priced so stupidity high? I just don't get it! Absolute blasphemy

Those three little letters at the end is where the money goes...CSL.
If he takes good care of her then he won't lose much when it comes time to sell. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I agree. There are better cars to be had at that age for a LOT less.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

Don't blame the car, it is your son who needs to be certified.
How much were these things new?0 -
It's not a luxury car, it's supposed to be some sort of race replica0
-
It's a stripped down less-is-more special version.0

I like proper cars with less rubbish to go wrong.
However like the OP i had no idea people had put these into the same frankly stupid price category as early RWD Escorts and VW camper vans.
So long as the fashion police continue to nod favourably, the car should hold its value, however your sons costs have only just started, keeping this thing in the right condition is going to cost him a fortune over the coming years.
If he wanted quick that can be used as its designed in almost all conditions then that budget would have got him a 2 year old Imprezza STi Cosworth.
There's a brand new STi on sale at the moment for less than £30k.
Hope the BMW turns out to be a good one.0 -
Is your son a right ole` danny dyer geezer?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

Did you provide the money that he used to pay for it? If not then it's got sweet FA to do with you what he spends his money on. He's a big boy and can make his own decisions. Fortunately he probably understands cars far better than you do, and he may well have an appreciating asset while your tin box is depreciating into the ground.0
