  • Colleague I use to work with several years ago had a Mazda RX8. on autotrader you can pick one up well under £5k, has leather seats, fancy interior and the lot and probably just as fast as my sons car seeing that it's a sports car. It would have been more comforting knowing that he spent under £5k for a 10 year old car instead of £36!

    RX8 vs M3 CSL.

I think we all know how that ends.

Take them to the Ring and thrash them around it, and the RX8 will eat all its oil by the time it reaches Karussell.

    !

I think you need to do some research into just what your son has bought....people here have explained it, but the statement above suggests you don't get what is being said.

The rx8's "fancy interior" is awash with cheap cheap plastic,
The leather is such low quality that it looks terrible after a few years.
and believe me, and everyone else who is a petrol head....just because they call it a sports car...doesn't mean its anywhere close to being a rival to your sons CSL.
Let the man make his own damned decisions, how old is he? 15?

Regarding the RX8, the engine problems were largely caused by mistreatment, owners not reading the manual, not understanding how to look after a rotary engine. In the same way that people have issues with modern diesels, because they don't drive them the way they were intended.

Doesnt stop it being a major problem and a major risk when buying one.
  • You sound a little young to have a son old enough to buy such a car.
My girlfriend is taking out a loan of around £5-6k to pay for her brothers wedding. I am serious with my girlfriend (been together for 2 and a half years) and plan to marry couple years down the line when we are more financially secure.

A bit on our current situation: We have bought a 1 bed flat in shared ownership around year ago and both go 50/50 on everything, i.e. utility bills, rent, mortgage etc although i did provide 70% of the deposit. Neither of us currently have a cash flow of savings, its all locked down in the deposit of the flat.

My concern is her taking out a loan of her brothers wedding. His not the sharpest tool in the box and doesn't have any savings or a steady career. My girlfriend tells me she is unsure when he'll pay her back and she isn't exactly in the best financial position herself. According to her, it was either that she takes a loan out or her parents would have to remortgage the house for the wedding. Absolutely absurd I know, but in their culture its very important to keep face.

I'm definitely not keen on her taking out a loan, it will impact us both as a couple, i.e. we can't stair case up to 100% of the mortgage for the flat as quickly, she's putting on hold a much needed car to replace her old existing one and generally not having as much disposable income. God forbid if any of us lose our jobs we will really struggle to keep up with the mortgage and rent payments.

I don't really have much faith in her brother paying back. Like I said, he just doesn't seem to have much common sense.

How can I approach this issue? Clearly it isn't none of my business getting involved in their family affairs but at the same time I am in a financial commitment with my partner so I feel like I'm in the right to know but just don't know how to communicate it across in an effective manner?

Breaking news. Fantasist Darkmatter101 alter-ego emerges.

In one thread, another suspect AE (BMWM5 or something) actually has a conversation with him and posts support for his drivel.

That's a whole new level of Walter Mitty.

(Former owner - hell yes, I'm biased!)
RX8 are renowned for hot start issues, drinking oil and requiring engine rebuilds.

Hot start, engine rebuild - if abused. I admit they're more fragile engines.
Drinking oil?! Unlike other engines, they use oil by design, it's actually purposely put in there!
A mechanic friend of mine says that RX8s can be really problematic.

See also: every single other car. An RX8 would be buttons to maintain, compared to an M3, never mind a CSL. Engine rebuild is £2,000. How much for a set of M3 brake disks?!
Any under £5K either need or are going to need a £2.5K engine rebuild sometime soon.

    Very bad engines.

    Avoid.

I think you're a bit out of date, I'd say under £3k now, because of their reputation. The engine is not 'very bad' it's excellent and unique. Terrible for school runs etc though.
Take them to the Ring and thrash them around it, and the RX8 will eat all its oil by the time it reaches Karussell.

The CSL will spank the RX8, but the RX8 will need multiple pit stops for fuel before you would need to check the oil.

What is the RX8 interior/leather cheap compared to? A TT? Yes. Any other rivals? Yes, it's a sports car, just look at the MPG ;-)

    YES, YES, YES!

Yup. You MUST do your research before you buy one (even more important than with 'normal' cars). no doubt. And you MUST test a hot start, no matter how great the engine seems otherwise.

I really like the RX8, if I was going to sell the wifes mr2 the Rx8 is what I would replace it with. Test drove one last year until we decided to get a sensible family car first. Find a pre 2006 231 model (for 'cheaper' tax) with hot start issues in good general nick for a grand or so, checking usual culprits like rusty bootlid under light , sills under door seals etc, then do engine rebuild at specialist, new cat, new plugs leads and coils, maybe new clutch too for £3500k or so and if you look after it, check oil every other fill up, no cold shutdowns or short trips, it will do 100k miles easily.
  • Seems like quite a compromise having an RX-8
