    Thats a subjective viewpoint.

    There are various reasons why the CSL is the price it is. I guess you dont grasp the notion of classic when it comes to cars.

    I most certainly do.

    I would of been impressed if he had come home with this;

    But maybe this one is more realistic price wise;

    Did you provide the money that he used to pay for it? If not then it's got sweet FA to do with you what he spends his money on. He's a big boy and can make his own decisions. Fortunately he probably understands cars far better than you do, and he may well have an appreciating asset while your tin box is depreciating into the ground.

    Very harsh indeed and has everything to do with him insofar he is parent and was/is worried that his son had been had. And as a parent he has every right imho to comment.

  • My Dad's neighbour had a CSL for about a year or so, sold it in the summer at a decent profit.

    Fantastic car, fairly unreliable while he had it though.
  • I still do not understand why that car is worth so much when it has little amenities inside. A normal 3 series of that age has thrice to office at tenth of the price. I mean, I'm not even sure whether it has a radio inside. It's also annoyingly loud at start up and whilst driving. He let me test drive it today and although I was going slow (kept it at 30 mpg max), I could tell it was clearly an extremely powerful car and I admit, it did feel something quite special to drive...but still, £36,00 for a 11 year old car with absolutely NO luxury???!!!!!!! My VW Golf, which is 5 years newer is much more luxurious and comfortable to that ridiculous car.

    Glad to know it holds its value and my son hasn't taken out a loan or got it on finance or any of that mumbo jumbo...thank god.

    You have to understand what the car is about; as has been mentioned it is not a luxury car.

    What they have done is stripped out things and made it as light as possible (even giving it a plastic bonnet?) so that it will go faster.

    They've also tuned the engine, taken care of the brakes, suspension, and so-on.

    It is intended to be a "track day car" car which you drive to a race track, have a load of fun in and then drive home.

    It's not really a car for driving comfortably to the shops in.

    It seems you still haven't grasped the idea of a performance car.

    Here's how you make one:

    First - take all the 'luxury' bits that the standard model has - and chuck them in the bin - they don't make the car go any faster.

    Second - take all the soft 'luxury' suspension parts and replace them with rock solid springs and shocks - so that it goes round corners MUCH faster.

    Third - replace the economic standard engine with a 6 cylinder 343bhp race engine.

    Fourth - replace the roof and several other bits with carbon-fibre to save weight - also remove sound insulation.

    Fifth - replace the standard seats with hard sports seats to stop you sliding around under extreme cornering.

    I could continue, but in your search for 'luxury' you possibly wouldn't understand.

    BMWs are not luxury cars (well some of them possibly are) but are primarily built for driver enjoyment.

    Have you ever driven a Cadillac or a Rolls Royce? They are for sitting in the back of, and paying someone else do the driving of the unwieldy beast. Horrible things to drive yourself. But they are luxurious machines - no question of that.

    Freude am Fahren.

    Pass on my congrats to your son.

    That car is a brilliant car , it is a really good investment providing it has been looked after

    look at the old bmw e30 m3's they dropped all the way to a few grand but now have gone up to £25000 plus (told dad he should have bought one)

    its similar to any other sort of fashion accessions for eg why are "designer handbags" worth thousands when you can buy one for £10 from primark will still do the job or any other designer gear one could say unique, limited, great looking, top quality etc....

    its really personal preference but being a car enthusiast i think it was a good choice if it makes him happy

    Maybe because it's an out-and-out sports car. You could easily take a standard M3 and tune it up to the same performance level as the CSL, but it still wouldn't be worth as much.

    Some people enjoy their cars, so spending £36k on one is, to them, an investment. I worked with a guy up until 3 weeks back who spent £76k on a Nissan GTR and is spending another £12k on a performance upgrade. Why ?, because he enjoys his cars.

    Totally agree with Rolls Royce they are really horrible to drive, we hired one for a weekend from my bil's company and what a waste of money it was should have gone with the Ferrari f430, but they are nice to sit and relax just not all that when you drive them

    You pays your money and you makes your choice.

    Wouldnt say either of those are "better". Particularly given it was probably an M3 CSL he wanted.
