Your son sounds like a shrewd individual. Ignore the comments on here from individuals who know nothing about cars. The M3 CSL attainted instant classic status when it was built. The small numbers built, and the CSL's iconic status (and ability) makes it a strong investment prospect. Prices on these are already on the up. If he takes care of it, your son will 'make' money when he decides to sell (whereas the car you drive will have probably lost over half of its value in depreciation). On this basis, who is the wiser? Don't believe me..... E28 M5's which could be picked up for £10-12,000 a few years ago are now selling at £25,000 plus. In 10 years time it wouldn't surprise me if the M3 CSL that your son has so foolishly purchased will be worth double that of what he has paid.0

Limited Edition E46 M3.
Stripped down and replaced with lightweight carbon fibre on the door cards, roof and trim.
Seats that weight 1/4 of the regular seats and lightweight BBS wheels.
Increase of the highly tuned 3.2 straight six from 344bhp to 268bhp and an induction system that makes the thing feel alive.
422 made in RHD form from 2003-2005 of which 234 or on the road currently and another 58 are sorn sitting no doubt in collectors garages.
I bought mine some 7 years ago, I paid £30500 for it when they were at their lowest price, and sold it a year or so later for £32500, my car only had 13k miles on it, I know it changed hands again recently with 21k miles on it for close to £40k.
These cars are disappearing from the UK and prices are still climbing, a very astute investment.
He could rent a new Golf GTi R for £200 a month, the CSL is appreciating at that rate, so he has covered his payments on his boring car as well.
What a clever young lad.0 -
At the end of the day - if the customer is happy with what they paid, no one has been ripped off.
That being said - if I was the customer, I'd go for something a bit cheaper!!0 -
If I had £36k to spend on a car, I'd rather go for a car that turns heads. To be honest it looks like any other old BMW.0

Colleague I use to work with several years ago had a Mazda RX8. on autotrader you can pick one up well under £5k, has leather seats, fancy interior and the lot and probably just as fast as my sons car seeing that it's a sports car. It would have been more comforting knowing that he spent under £5k for a 10 year old car instead of £36!0

Personally I'd go for an extremely high mileage A3 SE and then buy some S-Line bits from Ebay for it, better still an old Corolla, that would leave a CSL for dust and return 80mpg.0

Of course, part of the CSL weight saving was removal of the rear brakes.0

So you'd go and buy a car just to get people's "attention", that depreciates at your cost
All this so people can say wow that's a nice car, and then carry on going about their business.......“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

RX8 are renowned for hot start issues, drinking oil and requiring engine rebuilds.0
