  • Butterscotch - l think loose baggy clothes can actually make someone appear larger than they are. I think the trick to looking slimmer is to go for clothes that are fitted, avoiding stretchy, clingy fabrics.

I think colour blocked dressing, wearing the same colour for both top and bottoms can make you look taller and slimmer. A well fitting outfit can easily make someone look a stone lighter. "Flowing" clothes really only suit someone who is tall and slender. Think Cate Blanchet in those flowing robes in Lord of the Rings. Then imagine Jennifer Lopez in the same outfit and she would look huge, even though she is probably quite dainty.

If you have an apple shape then I think a well fitting jacket would detract the eye away from your middle and "rebalance" your shape. I'm not suggesting you adopt huge 80s shoulder pads, but a structured jacket works wonders.

Also a V-neck to dresses or sweaters would work well, drawing the eye to your cleavage and away from your waist.

I agree and that's what I do. I will try on what she suggests but I really think it's wrong. Will also do my own research for "apple" shapes.

Butterscotch - have a look at Marks and Spencer's style adviser online. You log in and answer some questions then they work out which clothes will suit you. I did this a couple of weeks ago, and they suggested some things I would never have looked at, but I'm planning to check them out when I'm next in store.

Thanks. I did BHS a while back but didn't look in to it properly. Will try M&S.

And thanks for the confirmations that La Redoute are decent. I'm looking forward to trying on the 20 items I've ordered - and glad of credit account!

DH treated me to a colour analysis session about 20 years ago by an outfit called 'Colour Me Beautiful'. The consultant was excellent & got me spot on (Winter range) At the time I took everything out of my wardrobe that wasn't 'my colour' & was really surprised to find nothing went back! Its paid for itself over and over again as I just don't bother with sale items if its not in my range & everything I do buy goes with what I've already got!
I did have a book by them that gave you information on your shape & what styles to go for but I think I must have loaned it out 'cos I can't find it :( Maybe the library would have one - I think the author was Carole Jackson (Amazon??)
I'm thinking of buying a pencil skirt as I always seem to be in jeans or trousers and dresses are a bit too 'formal' think I'll try one of the supermarkets first for a cheapie just to try out
Been sewing most of the day as the weather is c**p but have put a moisture mask on - multi tasking or what - haha!!

    Morning Everyone,

An early start for me as DS and I are having the annual trip to the Accountants, who are a two hour drive away. I'm in smart mode today - grey shift dress, black fitted jacket, black tights and court shoes and a pearl necklace. My hair is still looking great and I am so pleased with my new hairdresser and I feel validated in my decision to spend regularly on my hair.

I am looking forward to spending several hours in DS's company although I expect he'll be fairly monosyllabic on the way there as he isn't keen on early mornings. We shall stop off for lunch on the way back too which will be nice.

I've got a cold, unfortunately, but at its more at the back of my nose and throat at the moment so no red nose or mounds of tissues. I just hope I don't pass it on, spending several hours in a car. I got really tired last week and suppose that's why I succumbed. Plus the fact that I worked most days last week and so was exposed to loads of extra germs with all our extra customers for the holidays.

I'm having to miss Pilates this morning but managed to fit in my run yesterday. We are now up to 5 miles for our long run. Tomorrow will be the short run which is 3 miles with 30 second sprints every 5 minutes.

Better go as DS should be arriving to pick me up any moment. Have a good day everyone.

  • Morning everyone,

I am still exercising, I know it's only been a week but this is the fifth time I've done something and I just did it today without even thinking about it. One great thing about exercising is that I have to shower straight away so fabbing is part of the daily routine now.

I'm wearing a knitted dress today that's quilt clingy so it's nice to be a bit less bumpy to wear it without thinking about how good, or otherwise, I look. I've also finally got round to switching my GP, something that has been on the list for ages but I've put off.

    Have a good day.

Morning All - just off to the gym with my neighbour (we keep each other motivated) & then back for a nice bath, defuzz, moisurise and hairwash before we go to see The Second Best Marigold Hotel this afternoon.

I couldn't agree more. The hairdresser I use is expensive, partly because he's in a country commuter village where high prices are the norm but also because he's very good! I'm sure there are hairdressers around who are both cheap and good but I'm not likely to change anytime soon. I always used to let my hair go about two weeks too long (literally;)) but now I'm going more regularly I'm really happy with it.

Like the sound of the outfit rose. I enjoy the smart/business look but I've been working on doing smart casual well too.

I've got plans to see that film with a friend next week silva. I hadn't realised it was out yet. We went to see the first one and enjoyed it. Reviews say this one's not as good but some lovely salwar kameez outfits in it. It'll be a pleasant couple of hours of escapism anyway. Enjoy and I look forward to your review.

Pottering/decluttering through the day then a meeting at teatime followed by carvery in the pub with my colleagues. Meanwhile I plan to tidy some files of paperwork that are getting out of hand and also sort out the baskets where I keep tights and scarves. I've found that the areas that I've 'Kondoed' are giving me pleasure. I think it's the sense of achievement in being organised but also so easy to retrieve things AND I find I put things back carefully too.

Sun shining here at the moment but I'm sure rain on its way later.
