Thankfully on the female side of my family I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Prostate cancer runs in my Mum's family though - my granddad lost most (all?) of his brothers to it. He himself beat it and my uncle is very aware of the possibility.
Dad's dad though has diabetes from lifestyle - is that type 2? - and he also suffered from a few minor heart attacks a couple of years ago. But I don't think he'll ever change
I've been quite open about the fact that I'm trying to lose weight so I've had people telling me (as they do) that I look great, I'm a size 12 so nothing to worry about (well I will be a 12 soon!) etc etc. But I know I'm overweight and I know how I feel physically and I know the risks of carrying too much weight. The stronger, fitter and healthier I can be now at 27, the easier it will be to maintain as I get older and the longer it should last. If I could get to 80 without anything going wrong medical wise that would be a miracle but if I can't, well I'll be in the best possible state to get better.0 -
Any which way I look at my family I see cancer.
I lost my maternal grandmother to liver cancer (34 years ago, she must have been early/mid 60's), my paternal grandmother to breast cancer (32 years ago, after it came back after she'd been given the 'all clear'), and my maternal grand-father to prostate cancer 23 years ago (he was just turned 80). My paternal grand-father died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, which they think was caused by him having a stroke - but there's also a possibility the stroke was caused by the cancer they found during his autopsy (that was 27 years ago). And I lost my hubby to testicular cancer just over 8 years ago, which means the next generation have another to add to the family history.
I've never been much of a drinker, but I've not touched alcohol since the day of hubby's funeral. He and I were both smokers, and I finally managed to pack that in at the start of October 2012. So I already feel fab about both those actions
I now take vitamins and minerals every day, having done a lot of research and scrutinised my diet - the main ones being iron (always went anaemic during pregnancy, but scraped in for blood donating), calcium (I'm lactose intolerant, so don't get enough in my diet), vitamin C (another I identified as having a big shortfall with, especially as I consume very little fruti) and a couple of things to help with muscle aches and spasms (which I suffer from when I exercise). These combined with diet changes are hopefully helping my insides, which is part of my fabbing
And I've had stints of exercise I need to get back to - went off the rail when I broke my wrist badly in July. That will be fabbing for both my insides (cardiac workouts) and outside (weightloss and muscle tone/shaping).
Getting into a pampering / skin care routine is just another part of my fabbing.
Once I've lost the weight I [stike]want[/strike] need to lose, I then need to work on building up a more organised and flattering wardrobe - but in the meantime I'm going to work on not always living in jeans and jumper/sweatshirtCheryl0 -
Wanted to say Happy Birthday for tomorrow beluga, just in case I forget. Enjoy your strawberries.:)lessonlearned wrote: »I still need to get a Second pair for emergencies but I thought I might try online. Has anyone done this, any suggestions, any pitfalls.
I am also going to try and do some more Paleo baking this afternoon.
I have both boys here for dinner tonight, so shall kill the fatted calf and cook up a storm. Lamb for dinner, with DS1's favourite cauliflower cheese.
SNAP! I'm doing cauliflower cheese tonight too but with smoked cod. It's a bit of a treat as I try to keep the cheese/cornflour down in what we eat but between us it won't be too bad.
I was going to suggest that the reading glasses from pharmacies are fine in emergencies but when I read you were driving in glasses I'm now assuming bifocals or distance.
I need new glasses too. I only wear them for driving and watching sport. Had a laugh with the optician and said I used to watch TV with them but now that TVs have got bigger I don't need them any more!:rotfl:The pair I've got are really old so I fancy a change. I've got JackieO (that's actually the name of the style) Rayban sunglasses. I'm fancying something like this:

I thought I might go for solid frames rather than the wire type I've got now. What sort have you chosen LL? I'm happy with Boots for dispensing but I have my eyes tested at a 'proper' opticians after bad experiences at Specsavers. It was probably only local personnel but it put me off.I've been quite open about the fact that I'm trying to lose weight so I've had people telling me (as they do) that I look great, I'm a size 12 so nothing to worry about (well I will be a 12 soon!) etc etc. But I know I'm overweight and I know how I feel physically and I know the risks of carrying too much weight. Good for you. I think that sort of response is quite common. I think it's often motivated by a bit of jealousy not just that you're slim but that you're showing resolve and determination. It's weight round the middle that's the most dangerous apparently.
I'm having a pottering day today but have done all basic fabbing (nips off to spray perfume;)). I'm using up a night cream that I didn't get on with on knees and elbows. I haven't joined the using up toiletries thread but I'm certainly working on it. I've also managed a little bit of decluttering.
Next task when I get off here is to call Virgin because my phone won't work properly and I've only had it a couple of months. I'm dreading it as they always seem to ask questions or want passwords that leave me stumped and last time the guy on the line spoke faster than the speed of light! Wish me luck.0 -
I'm making some progress but not succeeding in all of my goals. I've lost some weight and have started to work through my earring collection - got into the rut of wearing a particular pair of studs day after day. Lots of good advice on here. I'm watching the "shut in" programme online - food for thought (excuse the expression).0

OK Ladies - here goes. First of all well done to all of you who have taken a long hard look at your families health and are putting measures into place to prevent where possible.
PLEASE make sure you have your smear tests & mammograms. I have had things picked up on both at very early stages so they were dealt with (including BC)
For those of you who may be predisposed to Type 2 Diabetes - my DS2 is type 1 diabetic & insulin dependant as it cannot be controlled by diet. However, he follows the GI diet which is very healthy for everyone (not sure if its compatable with Paleo though) so if you are thinking of reviewing your diet to avoid diabetes its the best one to follow (the Hospital use it)
I can't tell you all how glad I am that you are recognising that small changes now can pay dividends in later life.
Fabbing starts on the inside tooSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Maman
Snap with the glasses, they are almost identical to the ones I chose. Great minds and all that. The sunglasses I chose are black, classic Jackie O style. I shall be soooo glamourous. ...........
DD265 - it is quite common for people to try and put you off dieting or making changes to your appeArance. Often people feel threatened by the changes they see in you, especially if those changes also mean you become more confident and assertive, which is what often happens.
Just do what feels right for you.
One person sized 12 might look too plump, another person at size 12 might look like a stick insect. We're all different.
Most people sayi look fine. When I do confess how much I weigh they are gobsmacked. They say things like "Oh but you are big boned".
I am not big boned. I have tiny bird bones which is why I need to lose weight. I am too heavy for my small frame which is why my knees and feet hurt.
I am tall so I can hide the weight by dressing carefully, but I should be slender and willowy to suit my frame. I wasn't designed to be a female Amazon......:rotfl:0 -
Thanks for the support all.
Well I'm going to have a banana sandwich for tea - it's fruit and in wholemeal bread so that's totally healthy and then I'll be off to the gym.
I'm currently trying to work out how to get to the gym/swimming tomorrow as I won't be going my usual route to work (unless the roads have really cleared up) which means I'll miss one gym - might have to set off earlier and go to the gym nearer the office!
I will take my perfume in my gym bag tomorrow for after my shower but I don't really want to do that normally in case it leaks or gets broken. Any alternatives to taking a full, large bottle? Is an atomizer the way forward?0 -
I've settled on perfume after a shower at home, and body spray after a shower at the gym. (Also use body spray the days I just have a good wash.)
It's not as likely to leak/break, and should it get lost/left behind it's not such a great loss. Having worked as a cleaner at my gym (for 6 months from 2012-13) I've seen just how many toiletry items get left behind and not claimed within the 3 weeks they're kept for before being binned !!!Cheryl0 -
Mmmmm DD265 not had a banana sandwich in ages, and i'm stuffed now so no room, nor have any banana's in, but will defo have one soonLoving life to the full, just need purse full too

I especially like banana sandwiches when the bananas have been mashed in a little honey, and then sprinkled with cinammon
It's a combination I picked up from a long distance runner who ate them part way around to keep his energy levels up.Cheryl0
