Yeah i get the advice and from the looks of the advice is dont buy a diesel car unless your a company car driver but then again why buy a car when the company gives you one lol?
So not very good at comprehension of others' posts either?
Nobody says don't get a diesel unless you're a company car driver, the message is don't get a diesel unless you're doing the kind of mileage which merits having one.0 -

The only people I can see doing that high motorway mileage our lorry drivers, company car drivers and taxi drivers. Wait a min not taxi drivers cause they do city mileage not motorway mileage.
I doubt the average family does that kind of motorway mileage. Misleading marketing by dealers should not class them as 'family cars' if they are diesel.0 -
My diesel works for me on lots and lots of very short journeys.
But the maintenance is 1st priority. Oil changes every 6 months, A full service yearly and everything gets done before it fails.
As the winter approached i noticed it slowed slighty when cranking the engine so went out and bought a battery BEFORE it got really cold rather than wait for it to fail then get one.
I got a good battery not a cheapo budget one.

I owned a brand new Audi A4 2.0 Diesel (58)
4 times the DPF filter clogged up and put the car into limp-mode. The first 3 times Audi cleaned it but on the fourth they attempted to charge me a couple of thousand as they said it was my driving style - too gentle round the city and not heating the engine up enough at higher revs
BUT - I was actually the opposite, very fast motorway cruises 60 miles a day. It turns out if you drive too fast in sixth gear the engine revs are also low. So every now and again I stayed in fourth/fifth with higher revs on a cruise and it didn't happen again0 -

I work with several people who drive over 20k miles per year and fall into none of those categories, and who do benefit from driving diesels.
As you've repeatedly declined to tell us what your annual mileage is I think it is a fair bet that you would be best off with a petrol though.
Some petrol engine cars have DMFs, but my understanding is that they fail far less often than on diesels and so are less of a concern. You can also get petrol cars with turbos and that does increase the risk of an expensive failure on a petrol car.
As I am guessing you are concerned about fuel economy I suggest you check out the following website for any cars you consider, to see what real world econom is like:

Just get an old diesel with a slushbox auto. No flywheel and no DPF.
Loads of !!!! coming out of the tailpipe though.0 -

My previous hdi was the same, had to sit above 2,000 revs to do it's business.
When my Dad bought himself a retirement car after decades of diesel company cars he really wanted the A4 tdi, I convinced him to get the 1.8t, he's not had a spot a bother with the engine. Not great mpg, but he does less than 5k a year.0 -
Yeah i also agree they should ban modern diesels for the general customer and make them available to company car drivers instead that use the motorways to prevent breakdowns.0
