alec eiffel well done thats great, way to go girl. its not all about saving large amounts but small bits here and there soon mount up.I try to make every penny I spend do the work of two if possible .I streeetch the meat out in meals and waste nothing.Today I am making an orange drizzle cake and will use as flavouring some grated orange peel from one of my oranges from yesterday. I have some orange juice left over in the fridge about an inch or so in the carton so that will go into the sponge as well.I have some orange icing colouring to make the drizzle on the top.I wanted to make a lemon one until I suddenly realised I had used my last lemon last weekend.I'm not going to the shops just for a lemon, so orange it will be:):):) Come on its cake, not rocket science :):):)and it will help fill a space in my cake box .I have a fancy to make some cheesy scones as well as the oven will be on.I like to try to use all the space when my oven is on.Onwards and upwards chums Every penny counts today :)

Hi, just nipping in to say thanks to Not Buying It we managed to save 50% of our take home pay last month and this month we're saving around 40% (assuming there are no emergencies). It's tight, but we've made some changes and stayed out of the shops, it's been amazing! We won't be able to save anywhere near that for the rest of the year but we have low expenses in March and April so we're having a massive push and doing all we can .

    Thanks everyone!
:T Wow, what a fantastic achievement, you must be so pleased, more power to your elbow.

  • Morning everyone.
Well I've finished my March finances and WOW was it an expensive month. Not totally unexpected and no spur of the moment spends but no savings towards holiday either. There were two birthdays which I combined into one big present - son and daughter-in-law - plus anniversary, and I needed new shoes as had put toe through them - its a problem I have always had with feet. Will be so glad when can wear summer sandals.
Also decided to get cracking on growing herbs etc on small veranda - more spends (not a lot) needed, but am hoping will save money later in the year.
Was within income though - no credit - so this month will just have to be extra frugal. Definitely NBI.

Can't help with the toys, unless you look at the local buy and selling pages on FB, but shoes, I always check out TkMaxx every time I'm in town. I get all grandsons school shoes there, usually kickers for around £10. Even if they don't have his size it will buy the size up, he grows into them. Started getting granddaughters shoes now, if the price is good enough. Daughter had paid £32 for a pair, I got similier, reduced from £44 for just £7

    Welcome aboard all newcomers :)

Well March was expensive so I hoping to be able to pull it in a bit more this month. I had to pay the car tax for 6 months on the wee car, but I had £110 of that saved in my pound jar and by sticking it on direct debit I saved £7

Food spends this week so far is zilch. Been doing some very creative cooking, lunch today for two of us will be lamb rissoles made from just one left over lamb chop I found in the fridge which I think mum had destined for the dog lol. Made bread, soup and a quiche so won't be going hungry

Mind I eat very badly when hubby is not here. I just cba and usually live on sandwiches

He's going to be away for at least a month so I'm heading over to see him for a few days. He's paying the flights, board is already paid so it's just spending money and airport parking to find. I've a good deal on the parking, just trying to work out good flight prices. A friend is coming with me as she has never seen London. She also has to budget every penny so everything will be done on the cheap, packed lunches and Oyster card travel, with lots of walking, free museums and gallery's and pub dinners. Am so looking forward to it. I love London and still miss it. It's going to be great to show off my home town

Got to get a hair cut today. I've not had it cut since Aug. Been hacking at the fringe since before Christmas and I've made a right hash of it ( being as blind as a bat really doesn't help with home hair cutting lol). I've not coloured it since Christmas either so it really is a mess. Once it's cut I shall then see if I really need to colour it or if the grey is blending in ok

Work has been hard of late. Thankfully we have a new starter so fingers crossed my hours will go back to something more manageable for me. Yes the extra shifts come in handy for the money, but the pains in my joints are sometimes just too much

Finally seeing the seedlings pop through. Lettuce, toms, leeks etc No signs of anything that was planted straight out other then onions but the weather here has been so bad, I think the seeds along with the fish have gone into hibernation :)

Anyways, better run and get changed to head to the hairdressers. She's out in a little village, no shops so no spending opportunities :)

Well the lawnmower saga continues...went out to cut grass this morning, all well and good until half way round and it sounded like a stone got caught, blades have gone and now only half the grass cut!

I know it's easy to get replacement blades but this has just pushed me too far seeing as I hate the blinkin thing......sooooo I may have spent a bit of cash and a new one is on its way tomorrow and it has wheels, it doesn't hover like this piece of carp :j:j:j

I will be good rest of the month now :D

What a great thread. Since I stopped working saving money has actually been easier. We target the supermarkets for bargains, have recently bought some M & S curries for the freezer £1.20 each and a fabulous Thai fish dish for just £1. There's loads of charity shops nearby and I can't believe the things people have donated, silk and linen jacket never worn, ditto merino M & S cardigan and gorgeous Per Una jacket for the depths of winter.

I get my hair cut at the College but they do charge £5 for a cut, highlights for £25 great if you have loads of time.

My favourite money saving recently was going to an over 50s show. Free entry, lots of goodies including some lovely jute shopping bags from a charity. Best of all was winning £25 M & S token in a quiz. We saved this for Easter food, lovely.
