Stowaway here just popping out on deck to stretch legs.........I can honestly say apart from groceries, garden bird seed, household necessities and a small measuring jug thingy that cost £1 and I bought cos it was 'cute' - I know but in my defence I did get rid of a small jug that had lost its markings - I havent not bought anything else this year so far:)

  • Sort of drifted off the last few weeks. Trying to catch up. Sorry but can anyone point me in the direction of more home made cleaners. I read one for laundry liquid but I was hoping for a multi purpose cleaner, loo cleaner or washing up liquid recipe. There is lots on he net but I have no idea which ones are worth trying, any ideas?
    Thanks.

What? You thought milk chocolate, nougat and crinkly gold paper was expensive for no reason? Pfft.:rotfl:

Well that's OK can't stand Ferrer0 Roche chocolates, can't stand cheese and onion crisps either.

NSD here today. Was supposed to be out this evening but a bit bunged up with a cold and a dry itchy throat so decided to give it a miss.

Wondered if you might be interested in something I've been doing for the last couple of years (and can't imagine I'm the only one but I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner). When it's the birthday of someone I would normally buy a birthday present for, I take them out for tea somewhere instead. It usually costs the same as I'd have spent on a gift (plus the cost for me I suppose) but I get to spend time with a friend that we might not otherwise have had, a good chat and no bit of 'stuff' the recipient has to find a place for and might not want. Then, the friend does the same when it's your birthday (if they choose, obviously). I've really enjoyed doing this and I hope it might be an idea for some of the rest of you :). For me, it's not the money it's avoiding the extra stuff.

There is a thread on cleaning things, substitutes and home made things. It is called "Save Zillions on cleaning materials" or something similar. Zillions is definitely in there.

You can clean most things with vinegar, baking soda or Stardrops. Very cheap cola the cheapest you can find for cleaning toilets.
  • Managed to only buy 4 items to add to my work wardrobe, and one is going back as it doesn't quite fit as well as I'd hoped. Going to need the money back as the car went in for its MOT & service and needed quite a few pennies spending on it, but its done now and totally worth it seeing as I'll be doing extra miles in it now.

I had another look through my existing clothes and found two more appropriate tops to add to the work wardrobe so I shouldn't need any more items now :)

I must admit the new job has led me to fall off the wagon a couple of times, new colleagues showing me to the local shops and eateries has meant some £££ falling out despite me taking lunch 4 out of 5 days, so today I have taken proactive measures and got OH to make flapjacks so I can have them for breakfast and I've made some fridge bottom soup for lunches whilst he watches James Bond (again!)

Speaking of soup, we did have a stick blender gifted by MIL but one of the blades bent so scratched the bottom of the pan , so I have been using the regular jug blender instead to mixed results (the only time it gets used if I honest) I'm considering buying a new stick blender and getting rid of the jug blender, any thoughts? Or inspiration on other things to use the jug for? It was bought for an ill-fated smoothie mission I went on once, wasn't for me...

All meals planned in for next week, just the days TBD closer to the time, grocery spending on course to be less than last month :j

I find a stick blender much more versatile and less fuss to use than a jug one Penguin - my Kenwood mixer came with a jug blender attachment, but to be honest I never used it and ended up selling it on ebay still boxed.

They aren't expensive after all, and if having one will motivate you to make soup (which saves money) I would say it is worth it. I wouldn't be without mine. I think it is probably one of the most useful kitchen gadgets I have, and one of the cheapest as well :)

    Evening shipmates

Had a non-spend-weekend. Was out with friend yesterday and we normally take turns to pay, so one friend paid the tickets and the other the food/drinks. But it will be my turn the next time we'll go out, so basically not a non-spend but a spend-put-off-for-later.

Well no, I lied, it wasn't a complete NSW. I ordered a pair of shoes as my beloved all-day-shoes are starting to fall apart. So will see if the ones I orderd will fit.

Spent all day at my parents today, we had lunch and then played some rounds of Ludo. We all got a bit over-excited over it but it was lovely.

Jackie, I also suggest sharing the voucher.
I often do that with offers that are simply too big for me. For example my local SM sometimes has orange juice 10 liters 40% off which is a very good offer but since I only drink juice say every second week I never finish before it goes off. So I'm normally sharing it with my parents who have the same problem.

When I read Edwinks story I thought that it is sometimes really good that we don't know what goes into food. Even if that story is made up, there are plenty more who might as well be true... I don't want to know what goes on in restaurants and so on...

Someone apparently asked about cleaning stuff. I have a very good and cheap kitchen- and bathroom cleaner. Kitchen cleaner is a spray bottle with about 2/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar and a splash of dishwashing liquid. Bathroom cleaner is about 2/5 water, 2/5 white vinegar, 1/5 dishwashing liquid and a bit of salt.. That is enough for the regular cleaning. Found it on a blog years ago and am really pleased with it.

Since the group is a good source of all kinds of information, even I have a strange question... While doing some research I stumbled upon Philipps Tonic Yeast but found no explanation online what it is. I'm sure someone (Jackie?) can tell me what that was. It sounds horrible though... Like cod liver oil or so :-)

    Have a nice evening everyone!

(Sorry, Am having a job to work out the quote thingy)

Penguinofdeath. I bought a new stick blender from Arg@s a few months back when my old one died. It's their own cheap one at £9.99 and its just as good as my old more expensive model. :j
We WILL stick to a budget for all of 2015 without loosing momentum. :j
