RicardaRacoon I would think your tonic yeast is the same as brewers yeast. You can buy it in tablet form and it contains most of the B vitamins. It is also what is in tonic wine they used to give B vitamins as a tonic in the days when medicine did not have a lot to offer. I would not swear it was that but it sounds like it will be brewers yeast at probably 10 times the price. Just the same as generic paracetamol is exactly the same and branded paracetamol but anything from 4 to 10 times the price.

I rather think some people got better from minor things on the placebo effect. That is thinking it will do you good so it does. Back in the 60s when we were able to do this I had hundreds of patients have a really good nights sleep on 50mg of vitamin C.

My grandfather was a GP in the 1930s. Iron tonic came in two forms - the cheap version was a pound of nails in water, the expensive one used sherry...

Makes iron tablets seem quite pleasant!

Sanatogen Tonic wine was reccomended when I was pregnant with my first in 1967 :):):) by the midwife.I was quite anaemic when I was young and when I became pregant I seemed to worsen .Eventually I was taken into hospital and put on an iron drip for 24 hours .When my OH came to bring me home I had a lovely rosy glow and being 7 months gone and rather ...rotund he said I looked like a short round pillar box !!!! Cheeky blighter .

Back in the 60s people often took brewers yeast or Yeast Vite tablets to fight fatigue yet it would give a good nights sleep.I haven't seen Phillips Tonic Yeast for years, and I don't suppose its still on the market.Supposed to be good for Hair and nails but like most products then on the health food market it would promise you anything to get you to buy it

Advertising standards have tightened up a lot since those days .
I can remeber giving my eldest DD Minadex after any childhood illness to help her to eat more.I think the reason she ate more was so she didn't have to have the 'tonic' which tasted disgusting :):):) so if she ate she wouldn't be dosed up with this stuff :):):)It worked as she soon regained her appetite :):):)

Had a long chat with DD about the Aldee voucher and she said as I have a good chunk left over from February, why not take £20.00 of it and £15.00 from the March budget and see what I can stock up with in tins and long dated stuff,That way I would still have £45.00 in March's food purse and a full cupboard and probably freezer and even a couple of pounds left from February to put into the holiday fund as well. A sort of roll over effect .Sounds good as I will get the benifit of the voucher ,yet not blow all of my March budget. You can tell she's an accountant can't you :):):)

She thinks its great the way everyone is on board with Not Buying It and said if this spread across the country then maybe the big four supermarkets would have to lower their prices a bit.

I had to go into my local big Tosco's yesterday to pick up an item for her and was amazed at how prices have gone up since Christmas.I have stopped shopping in there after Christmas as it just was silly to spend more than I had to for basic item stuff.I got the item she had ordered and paid for and had a 10 minute wander round the store It is the gigantic one in Gillingham and to be honest there was absolutely nothing there than tempted me at all,not even YS stuff which I thought was even overpriced when reduced. They had a piece of sirloin steak that looked very nice (probably feed two at a pinch ) but was YS down to £8.99 from £12.75 this was at 3.45p.m. on a Sunday afternoon and it was dated for yesterday!!! no one seemed keen on buying it and I don't blame them.
So I shall wait for my voucher on Thursday (my friend said she would rather go without than shop in aldees ,daft bat :)) so gives it to me :):) No shopping to buy at the moment but during the week I shall inventry my cupboards and see what I can stock up on .If I really cannot spend £35 this week I shall hang on a few days more as the vouchers are valid for 7 days which will get some of my existing stock down a bit.DD says stock control is all about long-term savings .
Youngest DD gave me a plate of left -over veg to take home last night so I have roast potato's,carrot and brocolli in the fridge. I am going to get a chicken portion out of the freezer, and that cooked in my Remoska tonight will do me plus the cooked veg with some gravy.Dinner sorted and cost me nothing (apart from my YS chicken portion which was about 50p if I remember :) fresh fruit for pudding.Tomorrow night is quiz night so no dinner to cook as I eat at the pub(it comes in with the price of the quiz )Wednesday I have some salmon in the freezer I think I may dig that out as I have some small charlotte spuds in the veg box which will be nice with some green peas from the freezer. Right kettles calling me for a cuppa
    Have a good day chums

I have vouchers for Sainsbuds £12 off £60 and my weekly shopping is usually about 20 or less. We are miles from this store so I don't know why they are sending me coupons ;) but today I will be passing a store and need some summer clothes, new cups, a baking tray and 1 small pan for porridge making. I could also buy stuff for the freezer. Have made a list and will walk around the store with a pen and paper adding up as I go and when I have bought everything on my list will buy toilet roll to make it up to £60.
  • Good Morning one and all,
I am still avidly reading everyday although not posting so much. In summary:

    - NBI going really well, so much so I have a cunning plan to use the money that I would be otherwise wasting on rubbish (more below);
    - Managing to afford to send DS to nursery a day a week hurrah! So I get a tiny bit of me time and time with my DD (my children are 2 and 1 so me time is a very very rare thing)
    - Small business going well :-)
    - I have had 7 NSDs in a row :-)

So, to my cunning plan. We received our annual mortgage statement in December and, as per usual, I just filed it away after having the quickest glance at the figures. NBI inspired me to dig it out, analyse it and form a plan.

That plan is mad, daft, super-ambitious but I really believe that if you reach for the moon and fail at least you land somewhere pretty! We are aiming to pay off our mortgage in 5 years. Its pretty blimmin big, but we are going to give it our best shot. Every time I save some money through NBI, that money that I would have spent in a previous life will go on the mortgage. It helps that I can make OPs on-line as well. Phew, so there you have it shipmates, ATBs cunning plan!

    Have lovely Mondays all xx
    MFW :)

I had an OMG moment in Sainsburys, a shop in the next town which I don't visit very often. I was in to buy a condolence card. Then I had a wee wander and took a short cut down the tinned soup aisle.

The price that stopped me in my tracks was Baxters soup - I never buy soup, I prefer home made, but cans of their basic soups were £1.10!!! 110 pennies! Just think how much HM soup we can make for that amount of money - using Aldees or market veg of course!!

    I was truly gobsmacked!
  • Good grief that's 22/- a tin !!!!Great way to save cash if your old enough convert the figure back to LSD (old money )I stopped buying a newspaper when it started costing ten bob :):):)
  • Hi jackie, yes I often convert back and it's scary! I'm a golden oldie and can remember my Mum's consternation when petrol went up to 4 shillings for a gallon! That's 20p for 4.456 litres!!
  • Ah the far off days of petrol at 4/- a gallon along with pink or green stamps. My BSM driving lessons in 1960 were £.2.10.00 an hour (£2.50) and a yearly visitors passport was 7/6d.But you were only allowed to take £35.00 out of the country if you were going on holiday I went on a coach tour in 1961 and had to have 5 different currencies for different countries Belgium,France Germany,Luxembourg and Switzerland The whole fortnight cost £35 guineas and I took £30.00 spending money and brought cash home as well.I saved up for it out of my wages of £5.00 a week which took me nearly a year as by the time I had paid my 'keep' and fares to work I was left with just over £2.00 a week to clothe and live on :) But I would walk half way to work to save another shilling towards my holiday in all weathers.I was a determined young person even in those days .I'm not sure if youngsters pay for their 'keep' anymore :):):)
