Tesco Value snobbery??

This thread has inspired me to challenge myself - next month, whatever I need in the supermarket I will try the value option if there is one! I'm reasonably onto that anway - I have never tasted the difference in chopped tomatoes (sorry, whole tinned tomatoes- always about 3p difference if you chop them yourself!!) - but will try things like handwash etc soon too!
BTW I was investigating the handwash out of interest.. did you know that tesco value handwash is 40p but the value shower gel was something like 10p for the same amount? Both wash skin.... therefore I can't see the point in paying the 30p difference, when you can just decant a "different" product into the handwash container?
I noticed in Lidl the other day that they have 13p shower gel that is ph neutral - Just gathring the courage to try it, as my skin is appalingly sensitive! That isn't blue either, so that might go in the handwash dispenser too!!Nothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -
As an earlier poster said, lots of the time value/smart stuff is much better for you as it has just what is needed in it - no colours etc to make it look nicer.
I'm really getting into this cheaper stuff - why pay more for packaging as it's very often the same manufacturer.Thought processes can be managed positively, so that they help you to achieve what you want, rather than hindering your judgement.0 -
I don't actually buy too much Tesco value stuff anymore, Aldi etc seem to be cheaper, and nicer tasting, (but I admit that I'm biased, as I've got my own personal grievance against my local store.) I do like the Sainsbury's cheapo range though, as a lot of it appears to be fair trade, and pretty much the same price as Tescos, which is great.0

Our local tesco doesn't seem to have value milk chocolate lately either.
Did anyone notice that they advertised the value bacon for 80p a month or so ago on tv and now the price has risen (virtually overnight) to £1.28.
I am going to give Aldi a go this week I think and see what it is like!0 -
hello all
a quick glance before bed,
yes motherkitty - do try aldi, it s my local and main store before i have to go to town to asda for other stuff, but i find it a lot cheaper,
their chocolate is heavenly too, lol
m motto now is just try it once and then decide, there is stuff ive tried ie the nutty cornflakes from aldi, both my hubby and daughter not impressed so i buy kellogs nutty cornflakes when on offer in asda, so i try and keep the whole family happy, not good to force them to eat something they dont enjoy - so i make sure i take coupons into asda and get some money off groceries too. its about compromise, and getting a happy balance for the family and your budget.
Goodnight all and have fun

There's even certain value branded stuff that I prefer instead of like Heinz or some swanky expensive brand! Certainly don't feel embarrassed or ashamed that you buy this stuff
more fool the people buying nearly exactly the same stuff for 3x the cost
I agree with what somebody said in that I buy the cheapest stuff I can find that I like. If I don't like it I can always buy something a little bit more expensive. Make the savings on the household value stuff and perhaps spend a little bit more on other things!
By the way I have lived in Germany for a year and there is NO snobbery over here with regards to Aldi and Lidl - they are the main supermarkets!! Always packed, super friendly people and lovely staff. I wish it was more like that in the UK!0 -

They also seem to have dropped the value middle bacon. I found that it didn't shrink to nothing like some main priced bacon.
OT I live between 2 towns which both have a largish Tesco. Some things like Mattesons Turkey rashers are no longer available in one but still in the other. I assume that managers have a say in what they stock rather than stocking the full range.0 -
Value washing up liquid has disappeared from the shelves in our Tesco!:)Do more of what makes you happy:)0

Our Tesco has only been Tesco for 2 weeks, was Somerfield, and is not that big but still has quite a few value things. They are apparently hoping to build a bigger one though so we will see.
I also buy 'value' stuff from local shops sometimes, the 'Heritage' or 'Todays' brand can be good value sometimes.
My favourite value thing is the Tesco flours- plain and SR- great for baking with :T
Re the Lidl shower gels and shampoos- I have used a good few of them and they are pretty good esp the ones with the cream bottles and either pink/green/beige etc line round the lid iykwim- cheaper and work fine. I have also tried some of the Boots 'essentials' Pro-Vit shampoo/conditioner and it was good too, although not tried the hand-wash/showergel etc.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

The value ranges are being sneeked up in price.
Value cooking bacon 500g (Mis-shapes great for soups quiches etc) was 78p last year, 88p in January and now £1.18!!!!
I know it's still cheap but I think its the start of a trend, I read somewhere that the basic ranges are seeing a huge increase in sales, as are the luxuary end (people treating themselves insted of a take-away or going out to eat) and that it is the middle ranges that are loosing out.
Has anyone else noticed any real hikes?
Back to the original question, I decant certain things, to please myself as I like pretty containers, I understand what people mean about "reminding your self" about being poor, as thats how it all began for me. I don't need to be frugal these days, I see it as a lifestyle choice, so I can choose to have luxuaries in other areas such as holidays etc besides I almost see it as a sport!
I have found a lot of people are now "Keeping down with the Jones" bragging about how much they have tightened their belts! Dahhrling have you seen how cheap Kumkwats are in Aldi?
So take pride in what you are doing, and if visually it "offends" you, decant & repackage, and allow yourself the odd luxuary such as toothpaste. It is all about the balance that you are happy with, and no-one else.
Winky xRight now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before0
