OH takes lots of fruit to work each day and last week decided to try Tesco value bananas as their ordinary ones looked a bit past it. Have to say I cannot understand why they are cheaper as they tasted just as good as others.

I dont know how many of you have read 'The great disguised own brand hunt' on the shop but dont drop board? It is very enlightening:D Tesco value bananas are exactly the same as tesco normal bananas, just maybe the 'wrong' shape. Same as sainsburys, they are always fairtrade and often named brands. I got Chiquita bananas as my Basic Tesco ones the other day!

I use Asda & Lidl in the main - but I'm really miffed to see that Lidl have increased the cost of their (lovely) Sangria to over £5 a bottle:mad: its about 2 euros in the Lidl shops on the continent

I wonder if it is subject to teh same duty as wine? If so, that adds on about £1.50 BEFORE VAT. It's little wonder its much more expensive here!

Similar thing with the 'SmartPrice' potatoes in Asda. Last week I got Desiree pots (73p for 2.5kg) - but they were a bit 'knobblier' than the other Desiree pots.

I find the Smartprice or value fruit & veg is no different, just maybe bigger or smaller and not as uniform as the regular priced stuff

The varity changes depending what is around, this weeks apples were Gala, last week I forget, but not Gala

I always get the smartprice fruit / veg where possible

I've also wondered why people don't buy smartprice bananas. surely bananas are bananas? Ours are always nice and green so they keep nicely in the fridge wrapped in a tea towel!

silvasava - make your own ;) Buy a cheap red wine from your local supermarket (even Sainsburys do one for £2.49). Anything cheap will do as by the time you have added stuff, it will taste lovely. You could even follow the theme by buying only value fruit (see below) to go with:

    For red sangria:
Add chopped apple, chopped orange, chopped lemon, a few strawberries, red grapes, rasperries, a little port (if you have some), a slug of Cointreau (if you have some). Basically add whatever you like in red/juicy fruits and a few liqueurs that work with red wine. I wouldn't add anything like rum or vodka, only things that are quite thick like Cointreau , port etc as examples. Maybe Pimms too... Stir and enjoy!

    For a white sangria:
Buy cheap white wine, add chopped white grapes, some chopped lemon, maybe chopped mango, chopped orange + lighter coloured liqueurs if you have any. A dash of seven up or spritz goes well too. Then add some ice, stir and you're ready to enjoy...

It really is worth doing this yourself as the flavour is lovely when it's made with fresh fruit and you know the flavours are all real, no artificial preservatives etc :T

Re value, yesterday I tried the Tesco Value vegetable stock cubes, as ingredients list was not too dissimilar from next level up. You get 10 in the pack and it was £0.19p and perfectly fine:beer:

  • My local shop is a Morrisons and I have to say the range of value brands seems to be increasing daily..... and I'm all for that!

I always buy ONE of an item first to try, then if it's ok stock up.

Last night we had spag bol with their bettabuy 26p spaghetti sauce, it was lacking a bit of tomato intensity so I added a good squirt of tom puree and to bulk it out a tin of value chopped toms. It was lovely.

I too have noticed the value ranges are selling out quicker thought too.
I always but value custard creams and bourbons etc. Stick em in the biscuit tin and they taste just the same. But recently they have all gone.

Mind you, Mr T seem to be increasing value prices. I went for value ginger nuts the other day - used to be 25p - they were 53p a packet!!!! and the regular ones were 54p.

I wonder if they hope people will get used to buying them and then not keep checking the prices.
