Well I'm quite happy with vaue stuff, though I have noticed a few looks from people when I open my kitchen cupboard, but nobody has every refused to eat my food because of it! Quite often the value stuff is similar to the high end stuff, in that it only contains the basic ingredients and not too many additives, though I know this isn't true for all value stuff, but it always makes me smile when you see the ads for the posh stuff saying it doesn't contain this or that!

Discovered my dd2's bestie is a label snob when I took them shopping, she was passing comments about people who bought cheap stuff, I ignored the first few comments and waited for her to notice what I was chucking in my trolley, then when dd2 started to join in that was it, my temper gained the better of me and they both got a huge long and probably very loud lecture about food branding and snobbery! Caused a great deal of amusement amongst the other shoppers in a busy Asda on a Saturday!

I love Lidl and Aldi for their great offers, the cold meats are fantastic and the spices are brilliantly priced. I have no problem with shopping anywhere, or going into a shop just to get the bargains and nothing else!

As for decanting, I have a couple of ceramic containers for soap, and just refill them from a value bubble bath bottle, and my tea and coffee are in cannisters so guess nobody could see which brand they are either, and cereals are kept in those big plastic containers, but that's to keep them fresh, and also cos the value cornflakes, oats and cocopops come in plastic bags that tear easily.

Toilet roll used to be something I liked to have the soft expensive stuff of, until I read on here about someone referring to it as flushing your money down the loo, value stuff is now used here, tbh its pretty indistinguishable from the recycled stuff, so perhaps everyone will think I'm being caring rather than money saving, that's if they really want to rummage through my bathroom cupboards and think about such things!

When the very first aldi opened near me, no scanner and till assistant knew every price by heart. Scary

Obviously they couldn't get the staff to continue doing that as soon enough they replaced it with electronic tills. When I asked, the manager told me that he was having trouble finding kids & adults who could do simple math.

Never had a problem with lidl or aldi - they're shops aren't they?

As for those people who say they can tell the difference, my mother can tell differences in a blindfold test what bit of potato came from which (and I mean from the same vairety of potato) - very sensitive taste.

I can't stand _any_ instant coffee or value tea - but I worked in a gourmet tea and coffee shop and was somewhat spoiled. I can definately tell the difference between tesco value and tesco own brand and wouldn't touch it at all. Instant coffee of any kind is yuck and I'd rather drink water thank-you-oh-so-much.

  • I have set me and my OH a saving challenge - we are going on holiday in October and have taken on the challenge to cut back on our everyday expenses until then to the tune of our £700 air fares. I reckon it'll be easy - he is cutting back on lunches - taking homemade rather than buying a sandwich/drink when out. I have the task of cutting back on our household items and weekly shop!
I have NO problem with Value products - some taste better/clean better. However My OH is a food snob (he hates me saying it but it's true!:o) and he will instantly make his mind up that something isn't going to be as good as soon as he sees the label (or lack of one I guess!)
    SO...
How can I sneakily introduce the value stuff without him noticing?:A
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
I miss using my infinite coupons at Tesco!
2010 was the worst year ever :(
But 2011 so far has been a lot of fun! :j

I've no problem at all buying Tesco value stuff - I heard that its all made by well known manufacturers anyway, so don't see the point of spending unnecessary money. I shop in Aldi and Lidl too - and there's a real mix of folk shopping there. Lets face it, with the hiking prices in food (and many other things too) most of us have to buy budget priced stuff.
Apart from a well off friend of mine who does all her food shopping in M+S  Even if I had the money, I wouldn't buy food in there on principle :rotfl:

the first time i went to an aldi it was exactly the same. and the queues went down a lot quicker than it being scanned. maybe it should go back to memory and teenages have to work there to help mental maths for gcse's:rotfl: my eldest son (11) would actually enjoy that as he loves doing mental addition etc. strange but loveable boy

Well since our new Tesco opened I have been trying value things. Tonight is the 8p jelly! Jelly is not exactly really healthy anyway, even the expensive stuff, so we will see what this is like :)
I try to take bags with me to save getting bags at the shops but I tend to chose based on the size and not what it says on the outside! :D
The value stuff is always at the bottom though, has anyone else noticed that ?

I think they stick it on the bottom shelves in the hope we'll be daft enough not to be bothered to stoop to pick it up instead (they hope) we'll just go for the most expensive at eye level.

The 8p Jelly is lovely by the way, add some condensed milk to make it fluffy jelly before it sets .....yum.

I worked in a well known supermarket years back and the value stuff is put lower down to discourage old folk from reaching it and it's away from the eyeline of anyone else. Shocking and clever marketing all at the same time really.
