this is the message that greets me at the end of the equifax registration process. almost sounds like they're giving me £1! what's the deal here???

No, they are debiting £1 from you - It's verification of your credit card and proof of identity check ..

this is what i expected. hardly seems like a free loophole to me!
  • Hi, I'm new and not really sure if this is the right section to post in.

My mind is spinning at the mo. Sorry it's long.

I had debts - not bad, as I felt I could afford them. I have a loan and have been swapping cards, managing to reduce debt by £2000 last year. A lot has gone on, I and my children were homeless and a lot of debt has been furnishing and carpeting our new home (housing assoc).

Life has been tootling along quite merrily. The engine of my car blew up last month, and I've had to replace the engine. Its a renault, its expensive - about £4,000.

I'm gutted and am trying to work out I can sort this out as cheap as possible. I have an M&S card where I transferred an amount onto 3.9% which I did in October. I also applied for a loan then to get my car, however, I tried two banks for the loan and took the cheaper apr. I didn't realise this would affect credit scoring.

I've cried for days but am trying to be practical.

How long a gap would be needed between applications please, for it not to have too much of an affect on my credit rating? I've been looking at the Morgan Stanley card - even if its for only part of this mess to be transferred to.

Yes, I am willing to sell my car if I can't manage the debt, I just want to see if I can deal with it first.

I really do appreciate any replies, and am grateful for you taking the time to read it.
  • I found this simple steps to obtain credit report.

    1. Visit the Web site for one of these credit reporting agencies: Equifax (https://www.equifax.com), TransUnion (https://www.transunion.com) or Experian (https://www.experian.com).

    2. Decide whether you want to order a report online, by phone or by mail.

    3. Have a credit or debit card handy if ordering online or by phone.

    4. Include your full name, current address and any other addresses you have had in the last two years, Social Security number, date of birth, current employer and phone number if ordering by mail. Sign your request and include a check for the applicable amount. You can expect to receive a paper copy of your credit report within 15 business days.

    5. Review the report closely for errors. If you do find errors, inform the bureau in writing that you believe the information is in error. Include copies of any documentation to support your position.

    6. Consider using one of the services that reports information from all of the major agencies - they can sometimes report information differently.

Unfortunately, we could not process your application for a credit report because we were unable to fully confirm your identity based upon the information available to us.
In order for your application to proceed, you need to write to the address below enclosing a copy of either a current passport or driving licence in your name together with two other original documents connecting you to your present address (eg. bank statement, mortgage statement, council tax bill, solicitor's letter, or recent utility bill in your name) these must be dated within the last three months. Please quote your reference number when you write to us.
    Your card has been debited.

I'm a bit worried and not at all sure what to do and I wonder if anyone has had the same experience. We decided to remortgage our house as we want to consolidate our debts onto the mortgage. We had an appointment with our advisor last week who told us we can swap from Abbey to Nationwide and we can borrow up to 90% of the value of the house, which is £155,000. We are shared ownership and have 80% of the property theefore only a few lenders available. Yesterday we received a letter stating Nationwide had turned us down because our credit score was too low. We both have loans and credit cards but never fail to pay and have always paid on time. Why is this?

On a separate issue, and this is why I'm a bit worried, when we moved into our new house the local council incorrectly spelt my husbands name on the electorol roll. Also, when I tried to register with Experien yesterday they said that they were unable to verify me and that I need to send in by Birth Certificate, bank statements and utility bills to confirm who I am. Can these issues effect our credit scoring. I would really like to know if others are having the same problem.

Last month Barclaycard wrote to me and said they were reducing my credit limit to £810 due to poor scoring. I really can't see why as I pay all of my bills on time and was not near my limit. Because they've reduced my limit, now I am.

In total I have 3 credit cards which total £8,000, plus 2 loans totalling £22,000. I know I owed a lot of money but have always paid on time and never before been refused any further credit.

I'm in the processing of claiming £881.50 from my bank for bank charges, I wonder if this could effect things?

Sorry to go on but thought if I explained everything in detail some one may know what I should do.

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to get my credit reports from the three credit agencies quoted in Martin's Article on Credit rating (Experian, Equifax & Callcredit).

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1101485056,23650

I will be using the templates in Martin's article as well, including a £2 cheque (can this be cash as well?). Anyway, I have two questions:

    1. Are the templates in Martin's articles updated? In other words, do these three companies still give you the £2 credit report. Is there any other information necessary to give them apart from Name, Date of birth & Addresses? Somebody mentioned NI number, phone number and employer…

    2. How do these companies know where have you lived in the past years? I certainly didn’t tell them, so do they get it from your bank (i.e. billing address?)? When I was a student I moved about a lot, and have just settled really in my current address (been in it since graduation, for almost 2 years). I am unsure which addresses to tell them, and for how many years spanning back?

    Thanks for your help.
