Don't really see the problem in teaching kids self control as long as you aren't teasing them obviously.

In fact most kids these days could do with learning self control- that is why obesity keeps rising!

10p Freddo chocolate each and brushing teeth at bedtimes solves the problem.

Haha that was the day when Freddo's were 10p!

    Definitely not 10p anymore!

Tbh, I see nothing wrong with buying yourself a treat, like a bar of chocolate, and sharing the one bar between you in pieces (roughly) proportional to your sizes. I'd avoid sharing fizzy drinks, especially caffeinated ones like Pepsi, with a toddler and I'd never let a toddler I was looking after see me consume something tasty that I wasn't willing to share. That's just rude. So I wouldn't drink a can/bottle of fizzy drink in front of them.

Also (as this is MSE) why are you buying this stuff individually? Way to waste money. Supermarkets sell multipacks of chocolate/crisps/drinks for a fraction of what you are paying. Buy it with your weekly shops and store it where the children can't see it. Then, if you don't want to share, you can just have your treat when the kids aren't around, and over the course of the year you'll have save a fortune.

Right Axel - so as you haven't answered my questions, I presume that (1) these are not your biological children, (2) that their mum pays for everything for them and (3) that you are accustomed to "treating" yourself.

In this scenario, I suggest that you bring yourself up to date on what little children should and should not have in their day to day diet, if you are going to take over as a father figure in this little family.

Morals and ipads do not come into it - at 2 and 4 what matters is love and consistency! Maybe you and the children's mother really do need to talk to each other about what she expects of a partner, and what you think a family should be.

At the moment, you are projecting teenage angst onto toddlers.

He used the word dad earlier on in the thread. I havent seen anything that suggests that these kids aren't his or that his fiancee pays for everything.

Poundworld also sell them cheaper I believe, suppose it depends on whether you live in a town full of pound shops like I do.:rotfl:

I do find the whole idea of sneaking out to buy myself a can of pop and a bag of crisps several times a day rather odd when you have a family at home. Surely a family would buy treats as part of the family shop and would dish them out at appropriate intervals? It does sound like the OP is the one with the overindulgence problem - and if they're reluctant to share then this suggests that they subconsciously know that they're being greedy.

Kids want sweets. If you go into a shop which sells them they want em, even more so if you're buying them for yourself.

I don't hold with the idea that a child should get everything the adult has or else the parent is mean, cruel etc. However, the whole smoking, fizzy soft drinks and confectionary thing in front of them is not a good example to set.

I bought five organic Fairtrade bananas in Sainsbury's on Monday for 88p (not reduced or an offer either) and the banana though sweet at least has more nutritive value than a Freddo.

My brother and I had a budget for sweets from age of five and when it was gone it was gone. We didn't get extra stuff unless it was a day out/vacation. Then we would get sweets, crisps or chocolate depending on the kind of journey/length and meals out and ice creams.
