Happy (probably belated by now) birthday Gen
44 is a great age to be
Congrats Wheezy :T0 -
On Easter Sunday, at the start of the service at church we are doing Vivaldi's Gloria (just the first few minutes, where they sing Gloria, not the whole 30-minute piece). The only rehearsal is this evening, so last night I thought I'd better practice my violin part in preparation.
There are a lot of notes to play in a very short space of time
Anyway, having had a run through on my own, I thought I'd play along to a CD recording I located to get a better idea of pace. That would have been a good idea, except that the recording was made by a baroque orchestra - which is tuned to a different pitch from modern instruments / concert orchestras. So it sounded horrendous.
Plan B was to try to find a YouTube clip at concert pitch that I could play along to. Randomly located one, but blimey the speed they took it at
Cue smoke coming from fingers and my bow :rotfl:
At that point I decided I had clearly practised enough, and retired to watch TV ... this evening may be interesting!0 -

We'll end up on topic here, but I can't see how targeting the poor really helps.

I didn't think you were. I'm talking about policies. Cutting money from the poorest people in society but not taking a bit extra from the richest, because what?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Who says the richest have one two million pound property, not several under £250 or £300 k ?
One of my god mothers owns a house in an area now considered quite decent, but in the sixties, when they bought it, considered rather down market. Its certainly worth more than two million, But its pretty basic. When she bought it it was NOT worth a lot at all, she hasn't done much to make it worth anything, she certainly doesn't want to move out of London. She's not particularly cash rich ( infact she might be now from an inheritance, but I'm not certain). Its not hard to see why some one like her, working in an exciting but lucrative role her working life, who did not take far flung holidays as an adult, but rather kept a roof over the head of her children ( later as a widow when her husband died). Would feel 'not rich' because a house that was not very expensive when she bought it now is worth something even though she hasn't done anything to it, even , frankly, let it rot a bit.0 -
If the richest have several cheaper properties then they're all subject to tax in some form.
You're always going to hit some people harder than others, I just can't fathom how concentrating on 'scroungers' (otherwise known as the welfare budget) who are small in number and have pretty much nothing to start with is going to help us all. At the very least, people with ownership of very expensive houses have some form of choice. They may not feel rich, but they are.
I don't profess to know very much, but no one is going to please everyone.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Arguably the choice of those with expensive properties is less fluid than those with other smaller luxury spends like holidays. Quite hard to sell a scraping £2million pound mansion in a country where they are highly taxed, where as easier to be flexible about smaller budget expenditure.
Can we expect the value of chattels to go up or what?
While ours is not two millionour holiday budget has been zero. Now, obviously its helped by the fact that that suits our personal circumstances but its also a factor that that money has gone into other things, like the house. A 'really rich' person might not have to make those choices, shrug. I'm not sure there are that many 'really' rich people even on quite hefty salaries without money or other wealth / standing behind them. Even quite big salaries are just the big end of a large middle. The choices being made and in property, luck, is what's being taxed in many incidents. Two million for a house or flat ? Its not small fry, I'm not trying to poopoo it, but i can cite more examples of 'ordinary' situations of them than I have fingers without thinking too hard. And I'm just one person with a bad memory.

I have the opposite view. Why should someone who chooses to spend their money on their home be penalised against someone who spends the same money on fancy holidays/ designer goods/ fine wines?
Same number of people in a house, using the same council services, same size wheelie bin.... yet they pay loads more.
I have a different view again... same sized family, same sized house. In Hull, Band A, in the £900s. Cheapest 3 bed in Herts (Stevenage) Band C, over £1300. The minimum wage is the same everywhere, so why have a system that penalises the average family in the south? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

This is my view, too.
We're in a high council tax band yet don't use any more services than an average person in the same situation in a much lower band.💙💛 💔0 -
Non RP flew into the country today and the doggies and I went to pick up at the airport. Where I learned dogs are no longer allowed in the airport .
Dog dog and I used to go there every fortnight to get fir before she got fussy, and she used to chat with loads of different people and wait for him.
What a shame, another reason not to bother with the regional airport. ( you also used to be able to have a cup of tea or coffee watching the planes land and take off, but cannot do that any more either )
Non RP was tired and the animal crazy to see their grandparent so is sleeping here. Kiwi and the cats have decamped to sleep with non RP, dog dog, ever loyal, is glued to me.0
