There's been a couple of remarkable stories on the beeb today.
This one is of an Eagle Cam flying from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Absolutely amazing footage.
And this one is a fascinating tale of a man and his wallet reunited after 65 years. The contents are a real time capsule.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I think it's lovely the journalists bothered - shame the palace didn't bother, they could have made more effort.
Glad he was still alive, but a shame he's missed out on those memories for 65 years.0 -

Yodel.... Words fail me as to how awful this company is.
Ordered some tasty single malts yesterday from my regular supplier. Two delivery options.... Saturday for £14.99, or Monday for £4.99.
Naturally I chose Saturday (today) as getting 3 bottles of deliciously irresistible single malt on a Monday is about as useful as t1ts on a bull.
After staying at home all day, quiet as a church mouse, so as not to miss hearing the door, I check the tracking at 4pm and discover that while it did get to Aberdeen by 3:45, they are now scheduling it for a Monday delivery.
Tried calling, no answer, tried online chat, no answer....
Useless, useless, useless company.
I am now resigned to a distinctly mediocre bottle of Jura this evening that simply won't do justice to my celebratory Cohiba.
Just....
.... I know, first world problems and all that, but.....
*sigh*

As I read it, the palace talked to the journo pretty much as soon as they found it - my guess is that they wanted to get the thing back to him if possible, and decided that investigation of that sort wasn't their forte, so their best bet was to rope in somebody who'd be good at tracing the bloke, and willing to do it for free because there was the chance of a story in it for him. Sounds like a good business deal for both sides.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

It was very pleasing to see this on the box the other night. He might have had dementia but he had good memories of his life at the time of the wallet loss. It's sad he hadn't seen images/photos of his mum or dad in (was it 70) years - all his other photos were destroyed in the blitz. Supposedly people who've become blind forget a lot of visual stuff and some even forget what colours look like, even black.
Was I the only person who was alarmed by the Comic Relief TV stuff in which a woman with dementia was describing how her husband was away but she wasn't sure where, and they asked her if she remembered that he'd had cancer a while back?
There's a thread elsewhere on MSE about someone whose dad has dementia and whose sister had committed suicide. At the early stages of his disease when he talked about wondering why she was away so much his family would break it to him that she was dead, even though he grieved horrifically every time they broke the terrible news.
Eventually they changed what they did, to protect him. Neither of my parents have dementia but when I see what people put their parents through, I wonder if I'd do it their way. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
