Sorry to hear FIR's news too. I am sure he will find something and presumably even if he doesn't get the ideal role straight away he could find some short term contract roles to keep the money coming in even if they are horribly boring. I think if I ended up in a situation like thast I would take some horrid internal audit contract role and then not put it on my CV and say I had been renovating property/travelling/whatever for that time instead.

There are plenty of banking compliance jobs going at the moment as Gen says - although the idea of a compliance role at a bank does of course make some people want to shoot themselves in the face and a lot of them are at US investment banks many of which have dreadful reputations as employers.

The babies have just been weighed again and they have done really well in the last 24 hours - from both being 11% down on birth weight they are now only -6% and -7% so fingers crossed we should be able to take them home tomorrow. They are getting loads more to eat and are much more settled between feeds so OH is finally getting some rest even if it is only 1 hour at a time. She has managed to get them to both feed at the same time for the first time which is really helping in terms of time management!

Sleepy baby :) The baby that visited this afternoon made the most wonderful snuffly snoring noise. We had a nice cuddle, until she realised her mum had left the room to pop to the bathroom... and amazing how different she is since last time I saw her. She couldn't stop looking round the room, trying to work out where she was.

I have to say that a sleeping baby is by far the best kind of baby, and must never be disturbed or awakened.

I always remember a radio phone-in show where an expectant mum was asking questions like what would be the right time to wake a baby up in the morning!

TBH I'd much rather work for the Americans than the Europeans or Japanese. In European and Japanese banks you'll get nowhere unless you're from the Fatherland.

The American banks tend to be meritocratic although they expect very long hours from you.

Having said I'd never work for Citibank. Dodgy beggurs.

If the worst happens, plenty of banks are expanding their compliance areas. When they all do that together, as now, there is generally good opportunities for people with indirect experience.

Compliance is actually a good area for fir. Problem is covering our outgoings in some of those roles. Similarly some in house roles will mean its not really feasible to stay at the Wreck. Amazing when you think how much money we have put in it. Its not that our mortgage is over heavy, its that bills and the work left to do is significant, and there is even significant investment before it can work harder for us as we had seen options for in the future.

As I say, these are first world problems really. Although it would be sad to leave it won't be heartbreaking.

Maggie, redundancy does not apply. They need a FIR. Notably, to enable outing fir, they have recruited or sideway moved a team of well over a dozen. That should give some idea of the pressure of work one guy was working under.

And yet they are still putting him in a situation where he needs to walk. Crazy.

    Good luck fir.

It really IS their loss. I know it might sound like sour grapes from me, but I'm actually fairly frustratingly balanced in private. Let's be clear here, fir is not without fault ever, but neither can he work miracles, yet he has come near to it at times. Something he is pretty poor at is self promotion. I meetings etc he is quiet unless he has something to say, rather than making not good enough suggestions just to remind everyone he is there and thinking. This can mean he is overlooked, it can also mean when he speaks out against something its remembered

This for example helped build bad blood between him and sadistic boss....he said something they were doing was misinterpreting the technical data ...not legalese....he was poopooed, and then sadistic bosses team spent a month on this point not trying to get the answer right in effect, but trying to prove fir wrong. That is, in financial terms a hell of a loss of wonga and a serious case of weirdly directed hate. The result was, he had more reason to hate for, because fir was right. Fir takes no pride in being right fwiw, its not something he pretends to have had greater knowledge of, he just sat and read quietly on a Sunday, over and over, tried sketching it, looking at pictures then read again. And worked it out, then on Monday failed to say ' yes, sir'. ;) his card was marked already, and he's just not a yes man. When a quiet person says an adamant no, when noisy 'confident' people say yes loudly in a group, it unnerves people who manage by that sort of domination. Shrug. In real terms it IS their loss, if you all say yes, the financial losses, such as on that occasion, are no insignificant sum.

In truth though, for has also had some pretty wonderful mentors at his firm. He will be thanking them, because they are worth thanking.

I'm sure when this stage is over fir would like to have more to say about his view on GfC and recovery and aspects of it. Its been ill advised before, more ill advised now! Hopefully it will be it might be in the future too, lol.
