lir So sorry to hear your news. I hope fir finds something much more (drat, can't think of the word I want, so sympatico will have to do!), as he deserves to.

chewmylegoff How exciting! Seems odd to think that when I had my first baby, in 1975, people stayed in hospital for 10 days after a first baby, and at least two weeks after a C-section

    It was grim.

I was talking to oh today about what it would have been like a few years back - I think they have only relatively recently allowed partners to stay overnight in his hospital although that may be wrong.

If she had been on her own the majority of the time God knows what sort of state she would have been in by now.

I'd think it would also be really odd for you, being away from your 3 ladies so much of the time.

On last night's Call the Midwife (:)), there was a controversy about a husband being present at the birth (his wife was mute and deaf, and he was the only person who could sign).

Hope you've practised working the car seats! Exciting stuff :) (the all going home together for the first time)

The team these days is all about the noisy celeb-style ones....

    I take it back.

DQWD: I've either been offered a pony or a donkey/ trojan horse. Will have to see what it is when it grows up. Even if it's a pony, it won't have been given selflessly.

    Interesting afternoon!

The babies have just been weighed again and they have done really well in the last 24 hours - from both being 11% down on birth weight they are now only -6% and -7% so fingers crossed we should be able to take them home tomorrow. They are getting loads more to eat and are much more settled between feeds so OH is finally getting some rest even if it is only 1 hour at a time. She has managed to get them to both feed at the same time for the first time which is really helping in terms of time management!

    Excellent news :)
We are going home in 2 hours!

    More excellent news :)
I already told Ella she can only come if she stopped being grumpy. She responded by soiling her nappy and then weeing on me when I changed it.

Look on the bright side. At least, being a girl, she's not able to wee in your eye while you're changing her nappy. ;)

I have now lost 1 stone 6lbs and Josh 1 stone 6.75lbs. Josh has actually lost more as we didn't have scales to weigh him when he started, so have no idea what he lost in the first 9 days.

To get round the damaged part of his brain, his diet is very restricted compared to normal diets but so far, he is coping absolutely brilliantly. ..even if I have to manage it for him as he gets hopelessly confused by it all.

    Yay! Well done!

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Something shocking has happened to our dear chewy. Seriously, I'm a little worried. My thanks looked a bit heavy, I checked and he's found the thanks button? When did that happen? Was in in last years health crises of beloved Np's or is it fatherhood??

Well, I'm of course glad dear chewy, but while you've definitely gone a bit gooey over the pregnancy don't lose all your edge!

Lots going on in my life today.

They are starting to think about next academic year's staffing at work. I have asked to reduce my hours a little. It looks likely that they will be reducing by a bit more than I've asked for. This is a bit of a pity, but not a huge problem. Having got my compensation last summer, I'm in no danger of starving in a gutter.

I got home about 6ish, and was a couple of minutes into a conversation with DS that began "Mum, Mr X is going to phone you" when Mr X phoned. He is the deputy head at DS's school. Not enough people have opted for history in the same block of the options thingy as DS, so they will not be running it in that block and he has to think again.

He will still be doing 2 x Eng, maths, science, additional science as core, and computing, drama & food as options, but we have 2 choices to make about his final 2 subjects, as follows:

    1) He can either stick with philosophy & ethics in the block where he chose it, or switch that block to history (although it would be "normal" history rather than the alternative syllabus that he was hoping to do). Given that he is not doing geography or any languages, I feel he probably ought to do history in that block, because of the Ebacc thing, although we'll need to take advice about whether actually phil & eth would do just as well, and he'll need to think hard about which he would prefer.

    2) In the block where he was going to do alternative syllabus history, there is nothing he is any good at. There are 3 possible languages (and he is hopeless at languages and would fail a language GCSE if he took one) and business studies, in which he has absolutely no interest. So, he can either plough ahead and do business anyway, or, just to throw in a crazy idea from left field, he could do study support in that block and I could teach him further additional science at home. (Well, I could teach him the phys & chem, and I could pay somebody to teach him the bio if I didn't feel able to mug it up myself sufficiently to be able to teach it to him.) Mr X seemed open to the idea rather than horrified by it and said, when I asked, that he thought that the school would be able to arrange for one of their science teachers to supervise DS doing an assessed practical at some point over the 2 years, and enter him for the exam through their GCSE exam centre system. It would mean that he'd have triple science, just carved up as sci, ad sci & further ad sci rather than bio, chem & phys.

    Any thoughts, nice people, please????

Silver lining to the change in hours: more time for you/ your children (could come in handy if you're teaching them science ;)).

Plus, a chance to appreciate that you put that extra money to good use, meaning that this wouldn't be a financial disaster.

I bet there isn't much (if anything) in the biology you couldn't cope with. Plus you know people who know some biology (I'm thinking esp. of Zag and lir here, and I would help if I was able), and google is your friend :)

Not enough people have opted for history in the same block of the options thingy as DS, so they will not be running it in that block and he has to think again.

Anyway that you can suggest that they encourage more people to choose history rather than encourage those that chose it to pick something else? Could they swap the 2 histories over if the new course is putting people off?

I think an extra science with a good grade is better than a bad language gcse, but 2 disadvantages (1) teaching your own child could bring its own difficulties (2) its a very heavy science load. Have you considered other subjects eg statistics or geology?

Another option may be to study a gcse at evening college?

I taught myself 'o' level statistics in the lower sixth because I thought I was short on 'o' levels.
