Thanks GDB. That was what I wondered... why all four? In practical terms I thought it would make it difficult for friends and family to visit distant graves. I think I also read silver posting some months back about rising levels of anti-Semitism in France and people leaving the country, and thought it could be linked. If one good thing has come out of the attack though, I would hope that it is the unprecedented level of support for those brutally and senselessly murdered.

When I lived in France I found the levels of casual anti-Semitism very surprising. It was quite normal to be a bit rude about Jews and laugh at stereotypes. It all seemed a bit old fashioned really, like something from a novel from the C19th.

I've not "kept up" with the whole Paris thing.... did the shooters think "There are Jews, let's get 'em", or was it just a case of "Look, a shop, opportunity for our last stand, let's go in that one"?

As far as I understand, the original shooters were holed up in a warehouse, and a mate of theirs thought "I know, I'll take some hostages and threaten to kill them unless police let my friends leave the country without killing or catching them... hmmm... what kind of hostages would I most like to kill? I know, let's have Jewish ones."
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I know it's easy for me to say PN, but don't worry, it'll be fine. And chopped carrots are better in the circs than grated ones, i reckon :)

I have a hospital appointment this afternoon, and there's a bus strike today in London. Mr ivyleaf will take me by car instead, but there's unlikely to be a parking space when we get there, as the car park is bound to be even busier than usual, so he'll have to come all the way home and then pick me up later, which will be at school run time so goodness knows how long it'll take him to get there.

Such a shame we don't have the Tube around here, though of course that too will be horrendous today.

Re: what people wear to church; I'm RC and people turn up in all sorts of things at our church (no, Nikkster, not pjs. Not so far anyway ;) ) What I mean is, some people are dressed smartly (especially the African members of the congregation), down to jeans and t-shirts, or children wearing football kit because that's where they're going straight after the service.

Took the family to see Oman vs Aus in the Asian Soccer Cup tonight. It was great fun but is playing havoc with my jet lag. I've been up since 4am. Just as well I had a snooze at work :)

Jewish NPs, may I ask you a question?

Why are the victims of the kosher supermarket shootings being buried in Jerusalem rather than France? I felt that this was important, but the news networks aren't explaining why.

Will be out most of the day and tend not to go online from work, so if anyone answers and I don't seem to respond, please don't find me rude.

There seems to be a (recent?) custom for victims of terrorist activities to be buried together, as it provides a focal point for the attrocity to be remembered as well as the individual lives. The 3 teenagers killed on the West Bank were also buried together. Also in Jerusalem. I guess it was a combination for a wish to bury them together and that the families of the deceased may leave France in the future. There may also be a worry that the graves could be at risk from attack and therefore would be safer in Jerusalem.

With the need to bury quickly, the options are generally local or Jerusalem. The main group of orthodox synagogues in London operates about 4 cemeteries around London and also has an interest in a cemetery in Jerusalem, so can arrange speedily burial there, though that is usually something that only the very religious or those with predominately all their relatives in Israel utilise.

Burial customs are interesting, there are no Jewish cemeteries in Belgium, because the law of the land there requiries that cemeteries can be reused 30 (?) years after the last burial and that would be against Jewish law. So the Belguim Jewish authorities bury their dead in adjacent countries.

Our local forecast said it would be sunny in the morning and then rain at lunchtime. I went for an hour's walk with Doglet in brilliant sunshine, and now it's clouded over, looking distinctly like it's going to rain. So, spot on so far, and well done the BBC!

Edit: Just started raining huge drops, and it's very dark outside! I am so pleased I took notice of the forecast. :)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

We had it the other way round, woke up to dark skies and threatening rain which eventually came in the form of a downpour at school run time. Then, midday, the sun comes out and we had clear blue skies....clouded over a bit now though.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Life is too short for hand grating anythin other than a sprinkle of parmesan.

I use my food processor, or chop the stuff into small pieces.

Practice at proper cooking makes perfect, PN. Knife skills etc. are acquired over time but grating, meh. Leave it. It's nore annoying than chopping peppers, which I also find annoying.

5 minutes might be ambitious for full prep of a family size chilli.

If you buy packets of pre-prepped veg, it really can be 'just chuck it in'. You might find frozen diced onion useful. And lazy garlic.
