He was ill in 1990/1991. It was unflatteringly called yuppy flu. Our gp diagnosed it then said he did not believe it existed but rreferred OH to another GP at the practice who was a believer.

Ha Ha  I remember the yuppy flu label. Grauniad tends to bring it up every time it does yet another article about poor Simon Wessely and how awful it is for him that his patients hate him and make threats to his life. Something that has never been proved, but it comes up very regularly in the press. In fact it tends to hit more in lower socio economic groups, and also ethnic minorities than it does so called yuppies. But everyone hated yuppies so much back then just as they hated ME patients. so good joining up of hated minorities. As to GP not believing - I really don't get this stuff! Like I wanted to send my life down the tubes for the last 20+ years? Grrrr! Even our government recognises it's real. Thank goodness your OH's GP parctice had someone prepared to help. I was lucky with my GPs, which is why we keep putting off moving to ones nearer to new home. Better the devil you know! ;)

OH saw an AustralinDrin posh offices in Canary Wharf where he was subject to a lot of mumbo jumbo and expense. Key bits I remember are: daily magnesium given IV at Canary Wharff for a week every month followed by a week of eatining nothing but lamb and potatoes. Gluten free diet (in the days before GF was commercial) a war on Candida involving cutting out sugar and eating live yoghurt.

I've heard about the magnesium treatment, also the dietary stuff. Didn't he get offered Vit B12 injections? Some folks used to swear by them. Actuallly the GF stuff is quite a good idea - from what I've heard over the last 20 years some folks do find that helpful. The ones that do tend to not want to start eating wheat again so they can be tested for celiac disease as they had so much more comfortable life after giving it up they don't want to go back to it merely to have a confirmation of sensitivity. Plus now I think it's becoming recognised that some people have a sensitivity to gluten rather than true celiac disease. BiL has celiac disease, so have been interested in looking into it. If your OH is still eating gluten free you might be interested in this blog, which has some wonderful GF recipes, we intend to try some so we can make some biscuits for BiL for gifts.

Th GP suggested it was triggered by the shingles OH had had immediately befor it struck. He went from 13 stones to 10.5 (he is 6' 2" tall. He had very achy joints and could not come downstairs for weeks on end, he could not cut food nor cuddle the 2-3 year old miss spirit. He had a small business (employed 70 people) and turned over £3m, it suffered hugely.

Shingles as a trigger wouldn't surprise me. Charles Shepherd, a GP who is the medical expert for the ME Association got ME after chicken pox he caught when working in hospital. The weight loss must have been worrying, but when you can't eat I guess it's to be expected. At least my kids were big enough to understand when I couldn't hug them or do stuff - must have been horrid for Little Miss Spirit at such a young age, I hope she didn't think she'd done something wrong and it was a punishment for her. Business stuff must have been a dreadful worry for both OH and you! I'm so glad your OH was one of the lucky ones who made a recovery. :) :j

He recovered but it took about 5 years to ge back to normal, with a legacy of major aches and fatigue if he was at all unwell for about 10 years.

Don't want to be a downer, but he should still take care. I don't really follow the latest research much, but seems to me that if you have the underlying stuff that you get this DD (dread or damned disease) it can come back if you don't take good care of yourself, pace, rest, decent sleep etc etc. All boring stuff to do if you're feeling OK, but far less boring than relapsing!

My best wishes to your OH and hopes that he remains in good health.

And as ever my best wishes to you. I still send you the vibes when I sit in my porch and look at our front garden and down to the River. As I do for Generali still too.

I play the violin at church in my jeans! :A We have 4 services a day and mine is the most traditional - the rest are far more lively / family / studenty.

Have just started watching the Horizon programme on diets. Will be interesting to see whether I learn anything useful (i.e. more than 'if I stop eating Toffee Crisps for dessert I'll not put on as much weight' :o ) :)

Drat! I meant to record that. Will have to watch it on the iplayer.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Have just spent the best part of an hour reading the #foxnewsfacts on Twitter. I think my favourite is that Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa's less well known brother Aston was actually born in Birmingham.

Jewish NPs, may I ask you a question?

Why are the victims of the kosher supermarket shootings being buried in Jerusalem rather than France? I felt that this was important, but the news networks aren't explaining why.

Will be out most of the day and tend not to go online from work, so if anyone answers and I don't seem to respond, please don't find me rude.

I have no idea. The tradition is to bury within 24 hours, but that cannot be possible in this case because of PMs. Some people wish to be buried in Jerusalem, but it is rare and the chances of four strangers all wanting that independently are effectively nil. So, maybe this is a political move?

Edit: definitely a political photo opportunity, organised by the Israeli government, with speeches by the prime minister and president. Something else for the poor grieving families to endure.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It's to do with the Rothschilds and the Illuminati. I'd love to say more but we can't.

Thanks GDB. That was what I wondered... why all four? In practical terms I thought it would make it difficult for friends and family to visit distant graves. I think I also read silver posting some months back about rising levels of anti-Semitism in France and people leaving the country, and thought it could be linked. If one good thing has come out of the attack though, I would hope that it is the unprecedented level of support for those brutally and senselessly murdered.

There's a tradition that, when the Messiah comes and the dead are resurrected, this will start with those buried in Jerusalem. Why it is important to be near the front of the queue is unclear. I'm sure there will be plenty of space for all.
