    Library is an interesting one.

Some homes have few books / little disposable income for them while others have flowing shelves. I'd wonder whether library is as important as reading.....and communication about that reading. Whether its what you are going to choose to eat from a menu , what is on road wings, what's on advertising.....reading isn't just books. And no library attendance doesn't mean no reading, and library attendance doesn't mean the communication around reading.....just being read to is fantastic.....but the thinking around it even more.

Personally was not a big fan of those school readers, though see the point in them. Purely for reAding. Rattling through things that didn't interest them wasn't really helpful. Didn't hold up niece one, but think was part of the compounding problem with niece 2. Oh well....not my problem any more.

You are spot on with the thinking around the reading being the crucial bit. I'm afraid I can't find my copy of the book I got the data from. I do remember, however, that while being taken to the library isn't correlated with much, having lots of books in the home is well correlated with good educational outcomes - but surprisingly being read to is not.

It's unlikely that the presence of books in the home has any causative effect on the child - but much more probable that the kind of parents who have lots of books are also the kind of parents who are well educated, value learning, and will not only model that example for their children but talk with a wide vocabulary about a wide variety of topics, answer the child's endless questions with age appropriate detailed explanations, and so on, all of which will rub off on the child. Whereas less well educated parents dutifully reading books to the child without then discussing them and encouraging the child to think is ever so laudable but ultimately not enormously effective. :(
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I can't say I agree with mocking figures like Mohammed who are revered by major world religions, however. It's unkind, offensive, and hurtful to millions, including lots and lots of moderate muslims, whom we should be doing what we can to get along with. Although naturally I believe in a free society and a free press and the rights of journalists to publish things that I don't agree with.

    Nicely put Lydia.

I really can't understand what these Journo's were trying to achieve, other than notoriety. Freedom of speech, Press etc,by all means. But what was the continued baiting of Muslims likely to achieve? They continued to poke the snake under the rock until it bit.

I suspect that the only winner from this will be Marine le Pen. Nasty racist woman that she is. It worries me where this ends. Stuff like this makes people angry and that is clearly the Extremist strategy. I strongly suspect that they simply want all out war between 'Islam' and 'Christianity'. Attacking France, possibly the most secular country in the world serves that aim apparently.

Agreed, and that could also be a problem for us, A Terrorist attack in the UK before the Election, would provide UKIP with a terrific boost.

In fairness they have been poking fun at the Catholic Church for about 30 -40 years and no-one from there seems to have felt the need to shoot. Cartoonists are there to poke fun, and the latest cartoon of al-Baghdadi wishing everyone a healthy new year, does exactly that. (Not brilliantly funny though).

As an atheist, I don't think you should have to !!!!!foot round people's imaginary friends. I think the Convent education failed somewhere.;)

I was lucky with my parents, both from poor families themselves, but we always had books around. Even as a toddler I had the fabric books which were probably chewed far more than they deserved. I still enjoy a dead tree book despite having the kindle, which is useful for travelling.

I think there is a difference with Catholosim and Islam, with whole debate of whether figurative art is sinful or not. I don't know what stance is on that collectively in modern times ( if there is one..) but if its considered sinful or idolatry or whatever then to do it disrespectfully might be considered a double offence not the single 'poke'.

Its funny as more people drive bigger cars. The RR sits in spaces but leaves no door opening room in many.

In a village near Sorrento we saw a man squeeze his small car into a minute gap and then climb out of his sunroof :D

Another fun night with DS having a horror movie nosebleed and DW having to deal with it even though she sight of blood makes her faint as I was busy vomiting up the antibiotics. Remind me again why people go on holiday?
    I think....

After HutH I'm going to pop out to Asda.... that's where my number one shortlisted SC is sold from, so I'll take a look to see if they're in the shop/in stock. If so I might as well walk out with one, as I'm in there..... although I realise that it'd be cheaper if I could run (and get away with it).
