Wasn't there some recent research that saturated fat in diet doesn't cause cholesterol after all?I think....0

Is there anything to do with food that hasn't been proved by recent research. I wouldn't be surprised to find out (from the daily mail) that sprouts can now do your ironing for you, or that bacon caused the First World War (according to research carried out by the university of Croydon).0

silvercar I hope all goes well for DS.
Lydia We have grammar schools here and, as you say, a lot of children are tutored for the 11+. It was recently acknowledged by our LEA that this was unfair on bright local children whose families couldn't afford to pay for a tutor, while children from surrounding boroughs were getting places at our grammar schools, so the local test has been changed; I don't know quite what has been altered, but it is now supposed to be impossible for a child to get high marks just due to coaching . I think this is the first year of using the new test so we don't yet know how much difference it will make regarding the number of "untutored" children getting into a grammar school.
Just thought you might find that interesting
Yes, very interesting. They have made a similar change here - the new exam happened for the first time this autumn, and covers a much wider range of stuff, which is supposed to be less tutorable. I haven't seen any data on the demographics of the children who passed this year, though - probably won't be released until actual offers of places have been made in the spring rather than on the basis of the rankings sent to parents in Oct.PasturesNew wrote: »Yes, but it'd be nicer if there were somebody 24/7 on hand to wait on me hand and foot, sympathise, bring me small treats and gifts, pick up some ointments/tablets and cook for me
I'd settle for somebody who would occasionally take my kids off my hands for a while so I only had my own needs to worry about. It's not going to happen, though.lostinrates wrote: »Flat on my back again. Sigh. Very boring, and cold.
Meeting brought frustrating results too. Which means annoying decisions. But think I've made them.
Final annoyance, old bathroom floor finally went today!
V sorry to hear about the boredom, and even sorrier to hear about the cause of it.
Hope you are back on your feet soon.
What exactly happened when the bathroom floor went? Was anybody standing on it at the time?Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Unfortunately the boiler's on the blink and the boiler man has unsurprisingly (to me) declared that it needs total replacement.:(
DD is back! :j

No. He had to be at the hospital by 4pm. He put up with me until about 4.30 and then sent me away. He may not be done until late and it could be very late by the time I can fetch him home.
Hoping it all went well.

Why to people pay other people to clean their houses? Or do their gardens? Or clean their ovens?
I am now in the position where I am catastrophically short of energy and motivation, but have enough money and some spare. Paying other people to do things that would be burdensome to do myself is part of my recovery.ukmaggie45 wrote: »I've got to have more blood tests - B12 and repeat full blood count. Thanks for the reminder. I had B12 injections last June/July and was told to come back in 6 months to get my levels remeasured. I'd better make an appointment.
Maybe my B12 has crashed. Or maybe I am just feeling more depleted than usual because a long term has just finished and Christmas is looming. It will be interesting to get the B12 measured.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Part, no doubt, of the ongoing project by the Daily Mail to categorise all foods into those that cause and cure cancer.
I must admit, at the cancer ward I didn't see anyone being prescribed broccoli rather than chemo although I admit that there were a few that could have done with more broccoli and less pie.
Last day in Aus before I jump on a plane tomorrow. When I arrive I will give some free evenings. Sorry to have been so tardy.0 -

I seem to remember reading that for "normal" people the body is quite able to regulate its own cholesterol and eating saturated fats makes almost no difference to anything. However, for people in whom this mechanism has stopped working properly (as evidenced by high blood cholesterol) reducing saturated fats in diet does need to be part of trying to sort things out.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? I do wonder if the public would have a higher opinion of science if all the announcements about health didn't contradict each other. I fully expect to hear that plutonium's essential to avoid athlete's foot and anti-matter's a vitamin.:o
There was an article about avoiding Alzheimers in one of the more appaling dead tree periodicals. Took two seconds to realise that though it gave worthy and wise advice about avoiding rarer dementias, it had nothing to offer about Alzheimer's at all. Still that's the public told about it.:mad:There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

And if announcements about health in general are often contradictory, announcements about diet are even worse - frequently based on nothing deserving the title of "evidence" at all.Do you know anyone who's bereaved?
