Morning Lydia and Nikks, thanks for your answers, I feared that would be the case.

Yes, yesterday was start of Chanukah I think.....we did not eat doughnuts or other fried foods but rather baked potatoes and salads.

Um, floor just heaved a little, nothing dramatic, but certainly no longer safe to walk on. But, hasn't really been safe for a while, we knew this and just pretended it was. We can no longer pretend. :)

Re food, contradictory stories are huge stumbling blocks, plus the fact that so many of our diets are based around weight loss not health. My attitude is always that we should take what is natural ( both physically and emotionally) right and satisfactory and science should be aiming to improve that. Living on blueberries ( a 'superfood' is neither going to meet nutria all requirements nor emotionally fulfil you). Paleo diets? I'd like to live longer than the average cave man, with out any associated problems that diet might bring.

Advice I like includes 'eat a rainbow'. Its a very visual and compelling way to think about fruit and veg buying. You can think about it over a few days rather than a day if need be, but if torn over veg choice or what to take from the fruit bowl its easy to think 'oh, an orange is a good idea for me to day'. It helps stopping getting stuck in a rut.

Sugar....personally I don't see sugar as the enemy. I see daily or regular sugar and an adjustment of taste buds as a the problem. For some people its always going to be more of a problem than others. I don't eat that much sugar, but use it happily when I bake, male preserves etc. I just don't eat baked goods, jam etc every day.

In previous years I have always given up alcohol for the first three months of the year. I also have always enjoyed sugar fasts ( I love any sort of fast tbh). Sugar fasts really do help reset the taste buds I find though. Anyway, I'm probably going to do a sugar fast where I normal go on the wagon. Sugar is one of the few substances I never have problems with ironically, but now I'm able to eat veg and fruit again looking at trying a really wholesome whole food but sugar free diet for a short while would be fabulous.

Gen, frozen berries are one of the best frozen substitutes IMO. I make berry soup with them, ( A Scandinavian thing) and this makes nice breakfast or pudding, but we also use it as a condiment for porridge most often. Its not sugar free.

The one I've been sticking to is that if your dinner looks pretty then it's good for you. The point was made that a lot of food that is bad for you or that you don't want to eat too much of is beige or brown. So if you eat a riot of colours (I guess this presupposes you aren't eating lots of different flavour jelly) then you necessarily take on lots of food that's healthy. If I can be bothered, I try to plan food bingo, taking on some red, green, yellow, Orange and purple each day. Your way sounds much easier though. Trying to remember and can't, are there any berries that are native to Australia?

    Cross post. :).

I should have asked this last night while all the scientists were up and chatting but I was in bed. Something I've been wondering for some time.

It's about drug resistant strains of bacteria. I heard an article hear saying that the meat industry needs to reduce its use of antibiotics in cattle as this is having a knock on effect on drug resistance.

So if someone eats a vegetarian diet and takes care only to take antibiotics when actually needed, does that in anyway help with the drug efficacy on you (in that you as a person are doing your bit) or does the drug resistance come from the infections history before it gets to you. In other words you can have taken v few antibiotics, but the drugs will work the same on you as someone who has taken loads, because it is previous resistance that has mutated the bacteria, rather than the drugs own efficacy on you as an individual. Hopefully I've explained that ok.

    .Milk ( too short message)

Edit : but its the bacteria that become resistant to drug, not the person hosting them.

Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Loads although I've never eaten one. Snow berries for example and I think bush tomatoes count as berries too. The Aussies eat a tiny amount of native food. They even turn their noses up at roo which I think is a real delicacy.

The attitude is summed up by the old saw about how to cook a gallah (a native bird). You place a gallah and a stone in a hot fire. When the stone is soft the gallah is ready to eat.

I am going to swear, sorry:

    Thamelink Railways

There I said it, now I will go and wash my mouth out with soap.

Salt is another thing you develop a tolerance for. We never add any salt to our cooking as I find there is quite enough in any processed foods but recently when DD2 was being checked out for her fainting as well as not drinking enough the consultant also suggested that perhaps she might need more salt.

I fid a high sugar load also makes me feel a bit bleugh shortly after to the point where I avoid the sweetest cerals, ofen those that aren't sopecifically advertised as sweet still have a huge sugar load. I still manage the odd biscuit or slice of cake though :)
    I think....

For those who want to combine a fried breakfast with smoked salmon, it is possible to fry smoked salmon. I prefer it fried to raw.

Heat a non stick pan, without any oil. When it is pretty hot, put a slice of salmon in for only 4-5 seconds, until it changes colour. That's it. It completely changes the taste and texture. It's great with a slice of toast and some cooked tomatoes.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I seem to remember reading that for "normal" people the body is quite able to regulate its own cholesterol and eating saturated fats makes almost no difference to anything. However, for people in whom this mechanism has stopped working properly (as evidenced by high blood cholesterol) reducing saturated fats in diet does need to be part of trying to sort things out.

in the summer I had cholesterol and HBA1C tests with the lowest results I had had for some time. since then I have lost a stone in weight eaten almost no junk, a lot more fish, few puddings. Repeat tests last week both measures had moved adversely so I have increased statins and increased Diabetes drugs.

I have not been on a diet per se, just trying to ensure I did not gain weight through an enforced sedentary lifestyle. I was expecting the other health benefits to follow so am a bit miffed.
