Utility truck fine out here. Pants to ark in Town though.

Yes GDB, you have got the situation exactly right, we want a car to be two / three roles.

RP also suggested this evening that we consider car pooling, with us using that car when needed and just getting a smaller ( London friendly) car that RP can use more easily in London and fixing the defender or buying another one. This is very generous as RP's car is ( though I dislike it) by far the nicest. I know RP isn't keen for fir to drive it:o.

This would restrict our choice of small car a bit though. And have to see if big dog can still get in that car.

Are utes big? The Toyota ones always look quite small to me. I guess that's up against the massive cars aussies drive.

Why would I want half a sofa?

Ahhh... Nah, no need. I travel with my own sleeping bag and roll mat. And after a hard day's [STRIKE]cleaning and gardening[/STRIKE] next time it's eating ice creams and drinking beer, I have even less trouble kipping on the floor :)

Yes, no more hard work to be done ... well, that's the official line. There'll be a raft of jobs that could be done once you've arrived - and you'll, naturally, feel obliged to help with those :)

    No pressure.

I'll let you have a one hour break to have an ice cream and a trip to a local pub to meet a salty sea captain :)

    Well remembered.

I need to find a vase suitable. I was thinking of glass to show the stalk, but rust doesn't match the colour scheme.:p

Hmm, that seems alright. Why am I convinced he cannot tow then? I know the 97 dates as was vital for me. I wonder if 2013 date was a postponement or something? Hmm. Something isn't tallying or is not explaining fully I think.

    Oh well.

    My poppy arrived today!

Beautifully presented in box with booklet of poppy pictures and authenticity certificate but, stalk was covered in rust - I know they were from the display, but you would think they would have made them from non rusting metal. Also there is still mud splashes on the underneath of the poppy. All adds to the authenticity I guess.

Assembly instructions as if from Ikea. 4 different washer to be added to stalk and I can't fit the one that is meant to go through the poppy through the stalk.

Not sure what metal they are made of, but it's worthwhile giving it a rub with stuff like fine wire wool and/or other metal polishing solutions ... or, get some of that metallic paint used on garden fencing/gates - hammerite I think it's called.

I suspect the bloke started making them, then suddenly somebody ordered 1,000,000 of them and the original brief he was working to hadn't thought about them being out in the rain/so long and then there was a short timespan and it was too late to change the spec.

Unsure whether it is better to leave it in natural state, mud splats and all as a genuine souvenir of the display or whether i should clean, polish and repair.

They are long. That's what swb defender is so ace for, its wide but its quite short, you can squeeze it in small spaces ( you might have to climb over seats and exit through back door or something....but you can get in a normal space) unlike many four by fours. Its made for work / life not family /suburbs so it knows you might need to squeeze in a tiny country village spot or occasionally in cities. Others park in cities, but huge spaces or double parked.

I resent not having the stamina to drive one about any more as main car I suppose, but also think its not good for fuel ( financially / environmentally). I used to commute over 100 miles each way daily in a LR older than me, now getting to nearest city would leave me feeling rattled apart:o:rotfl:

Daily Mail said only the heads would be sent: "Only the heads of the poppies are sent to the buyers, with the stems, many of which have weathered in the rain, taken away"
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2831388/It-s-Hundreds-volunteers-start-removing-ceramic-poppies-Tower-London-moat-lifetime-installation-caught-nation-s-imagination.html

"Their arms filled with the flowers' stems as they made their way through the moat, the volunteers then began to dismantle the poppies, removing the ceramic blooms from the metal rods before placing them into cardboard boxes."

Somebody asked about that on the Tower facebook page. "The press are saying the stem doesn't come with the poppy. But you said on here they would. Have you changed your mind? "

    Leave as is.

You can change you mind later but you cannot put the mud back on. You could wax or Vaseline or something to stop further rust.

    Or ask their advice. :)
