I don't own any socks as youngest nicked them all, even the girly coloured ones.

All my socks are the same colour - makes them easier to pair up. At one time, we had five different lots of men's socks going in the wash. Pairing them up was a significant issue. (Yes, I know, pair them up before washing them, with a clip to hold them together. Does anyone do that?)

I have now given up trying to have separate socks for the three of us. We can all wear the same size. We have lots of black and grey socks - I do try to wear two the same, but I think DS and DD just grab two socks regardless of similarity or otherwise.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Why is the police helicopter hovering over/around my house? off upstairs to see if I can see more.

It's searchlights in the gardens and police on the ground in the car park and everything. Just turned on my garden lights to either help them or scare anybody off.

They're still out there... popping upstairs again.

I'm surrounded! Police just drove into the car parking area, now there are 3-4 cars and a load on foot with torches blocking the entrance/exit... and the copter's still overhead.

Just looking out the bedroom window and there are 2-3 coppers with torches going over every inch of the car park, people's gardens, etc. Helicopter's still overhead, road's still surrounded.

We had this going on when I lived in an inner London block of deckflats. Massive drugs raid with squad cars everywhere helicopters overhead. Made the place quiet for a while then the blues parties would start up again.

Its quite common here to hear turboprops and helicopters (both of which have distinctive separate sounds)

If its helicopter, I assume largely its Harrods or Abromovich now unless it hovers around, but now the police station is shut in the town (and despite the fact I live as close to a major security point), there's very little activity here.

I dislike car parks where you pay in advance too. How do I know whether I'll be one hour or three?

The free 30 minutes in our town has stopped me paying for parking most the time.

If not, I'll put 80p in the meter for 90 minutes, as I've very rarely longer.

If longer, as we're trying to sort the house out, I'll park in a free car park if £10 is spent, and usually load the car on my way out. They're used to my car now, so will leave it as long as I pop in :)

    Thanks. That's (mostly) very true.

Hahaha, brilliant. Our peach set always cheers me up. The duvet cover isn't actually related, but its the sheet and pillow slips I love.

I've never been so close to action before! There's no "live police feed" so you can find out what they're up to, or what they were up to. So it's not like I can even look it up in the morning, unless it was a big story that actually made the news.

Oh you can! Twitter. Our police helicopter tells us what it's been doing, but you can also tweet the local police team and ask them.

It's weird, when we were living on a private estate (as in owner occupier houses rather than council or housing association), this was almost a weekly occurance. Since living on two seperate housing association estates, about once every ten years!**

Nothing ever happens up here, the most excitement is when next door gets drunk and knocks on the wrong door or falls out of the taxi and that has happened a mere two or 3 times in 16 years. This for a road where according to rumour, is as rough as rough can be....

** On this estate, it has been once in 16 years.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

John O'Farrell: Loved his "may contain nuts", liked "things can only get better" but thought it rather moany and self indulgent.

May try something else of his now you've reminded me of him.

Socks: At one point DS1 had ribbed, DS2 had unribbed and OH had socks from next that came with black "n"'s stitched onto them. All black.

Now DS2 (as a student) wears white socks with trainers, he worked out that it was cheaper to buy new from Primark than to do a wash at the launderette. Except he keeps rather than discards and so comes home with enough socks to see him through the term!

When I was a student and he was MP for a nearby constituency, we had mutual friends (I don't really know how, given the age gap). He was a wonderful host. He also has the rare quality that when I read his writing I hear the words as if he is speaking.
