Poor DH couldn't get into the car as his door was frozen solid so he had to shuffle over from the passenger side :rotfl:Ah, the joys of retirement - lying in bed and listening to the neighbours scraping their cars (and tentatively waiting for the screech of horror from the chap who insists on de-icing his windscreen with a jug of hot water!)
If the landlord will agree to us bringing our cat up (it does say strictly no pets on the lease) I'm thinking about moving everything and everyone up in the next couple of months, before the house in England is sold. So, if anyone has any advice on transporting a former feral kitty who refuses to use a litter tray on a 6 hour car journey, please let me know.
A friend did this with a non-feral, fully tray trained kitty. Just make sure you cover the car seats etc with lots of plastic sheeting.
Keeping him in the house afterwards will be a challenge too  I was thinking of phoning the vet to see what they suggest.

I've never tried to contain my cats for longer car journeys; only the short 15 minute ones to the vet.
I find that after a bit of wailing and wandering around, cats find a corner among the luggage and grumpily settle down, whereas in a cage they keep wailing every 5 minutes or so.
Mind you, the furthest we've gone with cat is only about 125 miles. Friends at the old house used to do North Somerset to Falmouth quite regularly with theirs and had similar experiences....except theirs used to make vile smells all the way!_pale_
In the case of a semi-feral, non trained moggy, I think I'd probably opt for the cage!
Snowing hard here now.....:snow_grin0 -
Seems the weatherman got it wrong we finally got a hefty covering of the white stuff. im now like a cat on a hot tin roof until the lads get home safe.0

We moved three elderly cats 250 miles and used a big crate with grill front which we eventually covered as seeing out seemed to make them more noisey & stressed. Don't feed them before the off but allow access to water. We put a cat tray in with them filled with saw dust- crate was big enough. When they used it we stopped and I would take out the 'solids' & dispose of. You can tell when they've used it as it makes you gag:eek::eek:On arrival and in the house we buttered their paws. They wash it off & seem to then associate the place with theirs, but we kept them indoors for a fortnight with a litter tray and went out with them first before letting them free range.
Solid ice here & clear as a bell sky.0 -
Typically after being stuck at home last few days I have to go out today,
Can see the road has been gritted but have no chance of making the 150ft out of the car park, its a proper ice rink.
Cornwall council removed all the salt bins in 2010 to save money, so little point in gritting the road if little if anything can get to it. Main road is blocked anyway due to jackknifed lorry, so even with the vitara we not getting a car out.
I understand that there has been little point in the cost of gearing up down here for snow but due to climate change this sort of weather will slowly become the norm so time to rethink things like salt bins.0 -
There have been a reduction in salting roads in a lot of areas. The school mini bus driver is furious & rightly so as it's too risky. There's cost cutting and road safety is being compromised.0

Our road's been passable from about 08.30, but other roads have fared less well. There are people out and about now, but not much happened here before lunch. No buses yet. Many people here have just had a long lie-in, and the school being closed encouraged that.
Despite the snow, I ordered my veg seeds at 15.20 yesterday and they were with me by 09.00 today! OK I paid for 1st class delivery, but that's amazing: :A

I've used them for years, but go direct now, rather than via eBay, where you're asked to rate every packet!0 -

Check the weather/roads round Alresford Alfie - I'm waiting for a delayed flight, and looking for updates on FB about one of the roads as if the A272 is closed at the usual place due to idiots on the hill then we have one other option through Alresford. I'm hoping to get home tonight...0
