  • Morning all,

I am in moaning heard last night Lemmy from motorhead had died!!

He lived the life he wanted,,

Even though it's grey skies outside, its dry , calm before the storm!! Looks as though this storm coming in is a big one. And we in the west are going to get it bad as well...

Hope this is the last of it... But expect not.. Think I might consider planting rice if this carries on!!

Colder here & bright, but storm forecast & it is colder.

Just plodding on. Will have to go on the bus tomorrow ( there are 3 a week) as I have a hospital appointment - routine. I'll have to get what I can carry from the supermarket. I've got the wheelbarrow slotted up at the top of the track already.

That Husky ride-on is a good price if it works! There isn't a lot of info there though, is there? Looks OK...they can look much worse than that and still work. ;)

I have a similar rear-engined Husky in the barn, but it has a seized starter and all the tyres are kernackered, so it's not being fixed for now. :( It's really too large for our garden grass areas anyway, but it would do the orchards. We also need one that picks up the grass, or else we end up treading it into the house etc.

The mower I bought on the bay is a slightly older version of this one:

I paid £350, I'm not complaining, especially as it came with a spare new tyre, new belt, new battery and a full service. :D

Speaking of bargains, we were out looking at furniture today and saw an extending table reduced from £645 to £199 in the factory outlet. It was the right size for our kitchen/diner, but not right in the shade of oak they'd stained it. It had couple of small dings, but nothing major.

Anyway we went upstairs to compare measurements with other tables, and when I returned, there was a young Mum sitting very 'protectively' beside it. ;)

"Ah!" I thought..... so I went over and very pointedly started taking measurements, even though I already knew them.

Quick as a flash, the Mum shot off with her pushchair across the showroom, returning milliseconds later with an assistant.

    "This one!" she said.

I was glad. The temptation was gone. A few minutes later DW appeared, but I don't think she was too disappointed. By then I was chatting to the Mum, who'd been apologising non-stop!

I'm not sure about the husband. He appeared shortly after DW, looking [STRIKE]slightly[/STRIKE] totally out of it (New Year party maybe?)

"I've bought a table!" said the Mum.

    We left! :rotfl:

Quite a 'challenging' day with me. Rang hospital this morning to see how dad was and it was suggested I shouldn't wait for visiting hours and to come over. Did so and only just home now...Anyhow after a very rocky patch, dad seemed to be resting a little bit easier but who knows? To cap it all, carers rang to say mum had been poorly too.

Wind is just starting to come-up with us, no doubt rain later! First thing I was on the ladders ensuring gutters etc. were clear and everything was battened down in the garden.

Santa in the form of Amazon dropped a belated Xmas pressie -

I hope that your parents' health soon settles down again, IHS.

Winter's a specially difficult time for the older folk; not always just the temperatures, but the short days too.

I know the darker months confused Dad, who wouldn't always be sure whether it was 4am or 4pm....and I was the one he'd ring to check!

There are bargains to be had, but a bargains really only a bargain if you like the thing. Glad the temptation was gone Dave if you didn't really like the dark & would have made do.

Hope the parents improve IHS - Always a worry.

Well it's getting quite gusty out there, but it's still quite mild.
I pruned a fushia & the bamboo thing back today - they were quite straggly.
Anyone know when I can prune the mop head hydrangas? I did it one year late on & didn't get any flowers - they seem to bud up so quick that I miss the window with them.

Still really hacked off about the heating system, but a 2nd opinion will be delayed as we just the heard the chaps new wife has just had a cancer op. Is it me or is cancer everywhere? It seems to be so common here.

I'd prune at the end of February if it's mild enough. Just go back a couple of buds below the old flower on most stems and remove a few completely. That way, you'll get some completely fresh stems and flowers on the rest.

Cancer has taken the place of 'dying from old age,' as the different forms are now recognised, when they weren't in the past.

Sadly, many of the people I worked with have either succumbed, or are currently suffering. It got so bad, people demanded that the building we shared should be tested for high radon levels. The result showed that only one person was subject to high radon, and that was me, because the pottery kiln did something to draw the gas out and I was the one who was forever in there, firing it up and glazing pots etc.

They installed permanent ventilation in the kiln area. Then leccy became so expensive, I had to severely cut back on my pottery firing, (13kW @ 10 hours x 3 times a week =) so I was probably safe enough anyway.

One of my friends is from a family where genetics are the cause. She's somewhat younger than me and she's the only one left now. Those situations are often quoted, but actually rare. Most cancers are lifestyle- related, or just bad luck. :(

It seems to be people in their 50s that we hear of here - especially women.

Aberdeen is a high radon area - it's the granite that it sits on. There has to be radon tests done before Planning now.

Thanks for the tip on the hydrangas. They are looking a bit too straggly as they are so I will bear that in mind. I got them going from cuttings I happened to find in my pocket after walking passed a house down the road. They do make lovely cut flowers - quite stunning. But they are ordinary ones really.

So you did pottery Dave - how marvellous.

Supposed to be away to Inverness on the bus, but appears that there is a really massive landslide at Garve so no go. Stood for ages waiting at the top of the track before neighbour came and told me about it.

Feel disappointed as looking forward to getting out & really could do with some shopping. Must get dried out...........
