Daydream fund challenge part 4

Choille did you happen to watch George clerks amazing spaces a few weeks ago where a young guy was restoring a boat. He hadn't got a clue or any money but he put out a request out on the Internet and got loads of help. He promised people a nights B&B once the boat was up. I know he was near London so would be more likely to get help and it wouldn't be for everyone but maybe worth thinking about?0

RAS - Funny with the owl - cockerels do that to start with - like a bi-plane stuttering to start with so they are.
Fay - I did see that , but we will get there, just having a whinge.
I quite like the amazing places, but some are a bit silly, I think.0 -
RAS, good to hear from you
Fay, I don't think I have seen that show, sounds interesting.
Well as predicted the grass did not get cutby the time OH came home dinner was on the table and then it was too dark. Oh well the weekend it is :rotfl:
Work will be starting in a few weeks so we have time to get things cleared and organised. It will make such a difference to our home and I am really looking forward to seeing the final results.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I so understand your pain, choille. All the basics of building happen quite quickly, but finishing them off takes an age.
There's really no quick way to get a perfect finish. If a door needs 3 coats of varnish, with rubbing-down between each, then that's what it takes; i.e. maybe 4 times longer than a bodger would do it.
And respect to the suggestion, but getting others to do the work is the worst option of all if one is OCD about the final result. Time and again I've cringed over something our builder has done, yet at the same time I know his motivation is to work quickly and save us money.:A It's a difficult balance to strike. :undecided
Anyway , good to hear from you RAS.....alfie had a premonition that you were about to appear!
Mr Rod appeared too this morning, bang on 8am.He's been doing all the preparatory work for the rendering, with a lttle bit of help from me. He's also mentioned plastering in the living room, so I know he's on-board and has an emotional stake in seeing it through.:D
We had a good day weather-wise, despite a forecast that said 'cloud, then more cloud.' Bottom yard was really warm and I was back to shirtsleeves again. It's too much to hope that Mr Rod will get it all done in the dry, I suppose.
The maize harvest began in the valley today, but up on top here it's probably got a few weeks to go. Mine were rubbish!0 -

Yes, that's it Dave - you don't mind redoing stuff to get it right. It is the pits re doing stuff that's been mis-done. I'm struggling with some stuff, but we do have a good plasterer coming back soon. he's done his best correceting previous messed up stuff, but some stuff is still a bit squiggly!
Alfie - I replied to a localish ad to look after a lab. They came down this w/e. It was very badly behaved & she said she'd pay £12 a day - no more than that, she said. It hadn't been trained & was quite nasty & very smelly. I couldn;t have left it on it's own for a minute as it was jumping up everywhere & raided the bin, barked at OH & started showing it's teeth at him. It was a bit of a shame for the dog, but it would have been a nightmare. Noone seems to want to pay diddly squit for stuff doing.
We'edhad eally heavy downpours tonight.0 -
36 days of snow forecast after 'coldest Atlantic for 80 years'
Weather experts say that there will be 36 days of snow or ice across the winter months, with harsh temperature lows of -16C.
The chilly conditions are being blamed on the coldest Atlantic temperatures since records began 80 years ago, with Northern England and Scotland in for especially "full-on cold spells"
It's being so cheerful that keeps me going!0 -
Hi everyone
I hope you don't mind me joining in but we've finally made some progress on our daydream challenge so I thought I'd share with you guys.
Mine and OHs daydream was that we want to spend winters in Florida when we retire. Anyway in July we finally completed on our holiday home over there. We don't own all of it yet but we are working on it. When we aren't there a management co look after it and we rent it out to help cover its cost. It's cosy and homely and I love it so now it is time to pull in the belt a bit to speed up its progress. So it's now time to rethink the costs that have crept up. The food shopping, buying bits you don't really need, coffees out etc till its paid for.
Every penny is a small step nearer our goal.
Good luck to all daydream challengers. We will get there in the end.

Hello cuddlymarm. :hello:
I'd not want to go as far as Florida, but the idea of going somewhere warmer in winter has appeal, because my DW has had respiratory problems, aggravated by cold air, since she had an illness in her 30s.
However, if one has animals and land, that's tricky, so I think it'll be part of our next Daydream.0 -
Hi Davenave
We move around too often with OHs job to even have pets these days. All the family are up north so if we had any they'd have to go into kennels anytime we weren't there.
We both have creaky joints already and the warm really helps and when we are too old to enjoy it anymore we can sell and put into the retirement savings. The Americans call what we want to do Snowbirding, I quite like that.
