hi there,
i recently got engaged and always dreamed of getting married where my grandmother met my grandfather, married him, baptised my mother and my mother married my father in.
when inquiring about getting an appointment they said they do weddings only for the students of the university??!! its a large church in the centre of manchester just opposite the university. im dismayed to hear this and explain about my family connection with the church only to be met with an abrupt and impolite "we don't do tradition" has anyone got any ideas how i can get married in my family church. it is also the place my fience proposed to me.
ideas please please please

I suggest you ring again / go and meet the vicar (or relevant other) and discuss the matter further. When you go and meet them face to face, take photos of your mothers / grans wedding with you, as a bit of a lever.
Or you could go 'up the Church ladder' and contact the Bishop (or relevant other) and take it up with them.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

From their website 'The Holy Name Church is not a parish, but by the kind permission of the Diocese of Salford, we are authorised to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Matrimony for students of the universities and other institutions of higher education that come under the pastoral care of the chaplaincy.'
Sounds like they're not allowed to marry you I'm afraid. Maybe contact the Diocese of Salford to see if they'd grant an exception for you.0 -
Were you parents and grandparents students at the time of marriage?
If not, try and find out when and why the rules changed.
Good luck, OP. I'm a sentimentalist so I'd agree with you that it would be very special to be married there.
How about donations to the church in lieu of wedding gifts?:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
http://www.ulc.manchester.ac.uk/languages/information/faqs-for-public/#d.en.152175 is the cheapest I've found; not much over £500 and you could learn a language at the same time0
