  • I am so envious, this is something I would really like to try. I can use a sewing machine, do you think it's possible to learn from the internet or would I be better signing up for a course locally?

All your quilting is so beautiful

topsytyrphy, if you can sew in a straight line you can quilt. I learned most things from books and the internet. One site I found very useful was http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/ she has a lot of tips and techniques on there.

I have done a few courses but they have been variable in quality. The free motion quilting course I did was very little use, which reminds me, this is a useful site for FMQ - http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.co.uk/
  • topsyturphy, I am in a similar boat. I'm going to give it a whirl though, and try to make my rocking chair cover. I've ordered some fabric squares online, and some batting. I still have to get backing fabric and also some different fabric for the other side of the cushions, there's quite a good fabric shop near home. If it goes well, I can also make some placemats and throw cushions for the sofa from the same fabric squares, so will have a bit of a theme in the living area.

The worst that could happen is that it doesn't work and I have to buy something ready-made, so here goes...
  • Hi everyone nice to see we are up to a third page. Snoozer I
sew in my dining room in a little corner , I have a sew eezi table that takes my machines and then use dining table for cutting and ironing. Some fabric is in bags downstairs (current projects) rest is in an Ikea expedit unit up in my daughter's bedroom which was supposed to be my sewing room until she returned home. Not very happy with the set up as I have to tidy up for us to eat but we have a small house and nowhere else to make space. My roll of wadding is in the under stairs cupboard!!!
To the girls who want to give it a whirl , the Internet is a great place to start as are books. Quilting classes can be expensive and vary in teaching expertise.
    Happy Quilting all

Love this thread - and love the pictures (the celtic fabric one is amazing!!) I did a very tiny bit of quiliting many many years ago (in school in fact!) and I'm looking for a craft to pick up in a year or so after I have finished a work related masters!!! this has sparked my imagination - I shall be popping in to see your master pieces
  • I love Quiltville too.

Because I do everything by hand I do my sewing anywhere. I do all my cutting in the kitchen. I keep my fabrics in a sideboard in one of the bedrooms, for my WIP I have a large bag (I think it's a laundry bag) so everything can stay out but be tidied away.

Just realised I forgot to say welcome to Patches41048 I feel your pain about the sewing room being in a similar position myself.
    Happy Quilting all :)

    No worries Miffy

Having a work/craft/sewing room is an absolute blessing but I am finding it gets untidy very easily and must clear up before I start. I must be a very untidy person normally!

I have just invested in a second hand Janome MC4900Q (I think that's right, from memory) to go with my trusty Janome 525S. It was an impulse purchase and came with a quilting table which I am not sure I'm going to get on with .... battle is still being fought!!! lol

The room has a walk in cupboard which needs shelving properly and most of my craft stuff in hidden in there but most of my limited fabric stash is in a set of drawers in the room - full to bursting! must not buy more fabric ... must not buy more fabric!!!

Still trying to figure out the pictures. My first efforts look very traditional and simple compared to some on here but it gives me something to aim for! keep posting folks.

Hopefully this will work. Both were presents to suit particular interests as you can see. I saw many faults but the people receiving them were happy. :)

Woo hoo, it seems to work!

I sew in what is our guest room. I recently bought a Horn hideaway which is a collapsible table which contains my sewing machine, there is an insert which brings the bed level so I can FMQ more easily. Much better then sewing on a table.

    http://s25.postimg.org/4y678zatr/Sewing_toom_003.jpg

The book case has boxes of fabric, books, threads and pillows I use the inners to stuff things with. There is also two large plastic boxes in front of the book case with fabric in.

Another book case for fabric and some of the bits I use when quilting. Box of spare needes, spray baste etc. The ironing board stands in front of this. All the plastic boxes have fat quarters in.

My cutting table, its quite small as I do not have room for a bigger one due to the bed being along the back wall. My rulers are in a rack that is for plates, holds all the rulers I have.

Under this table are two large boxes one with bits and strips in the other has yardage in for backing etc.

I could do with a bigger room but unless we junk the bed I am not going to get one.
  • Judi24 hope you will take up quilting again.
Patches I love your work. As you say we know the mistakes but other people can't see them and appreciate the love that goes into making them.
Deleted_User lovely to see your sewing space, remember one can never have too much fabric :j
