Ps you have to be careful not to get blood on the quilt too - I keep hurting my underneath hand on the needle
Shhhhh don't tell anyone, I got a spot on the very edge of the baby quilt but trimmed most of it off and the little bit left is enclosed in the binding! I think it got away with that one!!!
Mission accomplished, the baby quilt is done and I'm just debating giving it a gentle wash with colour catcher as mentioned on here (grovelly apologies, can't remember by who) before it goes to its new home. I would like to see how it reacts to washing too before giving it to the new mum. She's a lovely girl but still learning when it comes to housekeeping. A few pointers won't hurt.
I was a bit stuck with labelling. I've only started labelling recently and wanted to put a small one on this one as it was a gift but OH didn't want to. Not until the little one is safely here and we are sure they don't change their minds about the name. I've sort of compromised in my own mind, its going without a label but if they want I can hand stitch one on later after the baby arrives. What does everyone else do??
I will post a picture later as I haven't photographed it yet. I only finished slip stitching the back of the binding at 10.30 last night - these things always seem to take longer than you think!
As for thread, I think this may be the cause of my problems - being a scrooge as I am I piece mainly cotton where I buy the fabric but use other types if they take my fancy - I'm also using up a stash of inherited thread - its composition is a mystery to me! When I have to buy I have used guttermans 100% cotton as that is what I can get easily. I have seen other threads online but know nothing about it. All advice gratefully received!0 -
aleceiffel you are so lucky to be able to visit Empress Mills, they are all such nice people, hope to see them at Malvern Quilt Show. Patches bet you are glad to have finished the quilt , looking forward to seeing the picture. I like Gutterman thread but the place aleceiffel is going to produce their own cotton thread which is very good value and very good for piecing and quilting. You can buy it online I think and they are usually at all the stitching shows. I have sorted the layout for my quilt , now need to add the sahings to put it all together.

Welcome MMCG and zippy. The Patchwork House is lovely ,it is up in the old town square next to a flower shop and Susan the owner is a really lovely lady who is very helpful. She has a great range of fabric There are some lovely gift shops there as well and if you need lunch or just tea and cake I can reccommend the Butchers Arms.
Looking forward to seeing your work .

Hope everyone is safe and warm today. It is a bit breezy here but not too bad and we have sun. Off to town later to meet the girls for coffee but may have time after I've walked the dog to do some more of my blocks.

Just a couple of pics before I have to start work properly!
The sun is just breaking through here ... Lovely.
Would you believe after pushing to get this one done they are now happy to wait until after the baby is born so that I can 'finish' it with the label ... I sense the interference of my other half here. There was no need to rush after all!
Still done now.0 -
What a lovely quilt, patches, is it applique or a printed panel?
I seem to have run out of steam a bit, not helped by suffering from a virus. I just have to put the binding on the celtic quilt and it is finished. I think I'll do a few little Christmassy bits next to try to get my mojo back. I have thoughts of making a chain of red hearts by making a quilt sandwich the sewing the heart shapes and cutting them out with pinking shears. I also have a reindeer pattern I want to make and a Christmassy wall hanging.0 -
Thank you Snoozer, it was a panel but when I got it home all the blocks were separated with a thin white border, not totally symmetrical. I think it may have been intended to be made into one of those cloth books I remember my children having when toddlers.
It felt like cheating just to quilt it as it was so it got cut up, put back together to get rid of the white border and the animals and letters had a kind of shadow line free motion quilted around them. It felt better to give it a bit of effort. The borders are because it would have been too small for the cot bed. It has an extra backing to hide the quilting around the animals and to tidy it up a bit.
I do like the idea of applique, it may be something for the future. I am at a bit of a loss now. Not sure what to do next.
I do have a few things on the go, I really should finish some of these but I just don't fancy ... and I can't blame a virus
Give yourself time to get over it Snoozer, the effects of a virus can last far longer than we think they should.
Take care everyone!0 -

I've made up a little Japanese style wall hanging to the point where it needs some hand stitching to give me something to do while watching TV after I've finished the binding on the celtic quilt.
I know some people are able to machine sew while watching tv but I'm sure I'd be forever unpicking if I did that. I listen to audio books on my I-pod (not really a music lover) at the moment I'm listening to The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch about a Harry Potter style policeman. Much better than I've made it sound and funny as well.0
